[1] Paul, an3 apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus4 [our] brother, [2] To the saints5 and faithful6 brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace7 [be] unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

⥃Thanksgiving and Prayer [ 1 Corinthians 1:4–9 † Philippians 1:3–11 ]

⥃The Supremacy of the Son [ Hebrews 1:1–14 ]

[15] Who is the image51 of the invisible52 God, the firstborn53 of every54 creature: [16] For by him were55 all things created, that are in heaven56, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones57, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by58 him, and for him: [17] And he59 is before all things, and by60 him all things consist. [24] Who now rejoice81 in my sufferings for you, and fill82 up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for83 his body’s sake, which is the church: [25] Whereof I am84 made a minister, according85 to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil86 the word of God; [26] [Even] the mystery87 which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now88 is made manifest to his saints: [27] To whom89 God would make known what [is] the riches90 of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ91 in you92, the hope93 of glory: [28] Whom94 we preach, warning95 every man, and teaching96 every man in all97 wisdom; that we may98 present every man perfect99 in Christ Jesus: [29] Whereunto I also labour100, striving101 according to his102 working, which worketh in me mightily103.

  1. Colosse was a large and populous city of Phrygia Pacatiana, in Asia Minor, seated on an eminence to the south of the river Meander. It is supposed to have occupied a site now covered with ruins, near the village of Konous or Khonas, and about twenty miles nw of Degnizlu. By whom, or at what time, the church at Colosse was founded is wholly uncertain; but it would appear from the apostle’s declaration, Col 2:1, that he was not the honoured instrument. It appears from the tenor of this epistle to have been, upon the whole, in a very flourishing state; but some difficulties having arisen among them, they sent Epaphras to Rome, where the apostle was now imprisoned (Col 4:3) to acquaint him with the state of their affairs. It is remarkable for a peculiar pathos and ardour, which is generally ascribed to the extraordinary divine consolations enjoyed by the apostle during his sufferings for the sake of Christ. Whoever, says Michaelis, would understand the Epistles to the Ephesians and Colossians, must read them together. The one is in most places a commentary on the other; the meaning of single passages in one epistle, which, if considered alone, might be variously interpreted, being determined by the parallel passages in the other epistle. ↩
