The Song of the Slandered 2

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

[1] Hold3 not thy peace, O God4 of my praise; [2] For the mouth5 of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful6 are opened7 against me: they have spoken against me with8 a lying tongue. [3] They compassed9 me about also with words of hatred; and fought10 against me without a cause. [4] For my11 love they are my adversaries: but I12 [give myself unto] prayer. [5] And they13 have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred14 for my love. [6] Set thou15 a wicked man over him: and let16 Satan17 stand at his right hand. [7] When he shall be judged, let him be condemned18: and let19 his prayer become sin. [8] Let his days20 be few; [and] let another21 take his office22. [9] Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.23 [10] Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek [their bread] also out of their desolate places.24 [11] Let the extortioner25 catch all that he hath; and let the strangers26 spoil his labour. [12] Let there be none27 to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour28 his fatherless children. [13] Let his29 posterity be cut off; [and] in the generation following let their name30 be blotted out. [14] Let the31 iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the Lord; and let not32 the sin of his mother be blotted33 out. [15] Let them be before34 the Lord continually, that he may cut off35 the memory of them from the earth. [16] Because that he remembered36 not to shew mercy, but persecuted37 the poor and needy man, that he might even slay38 the broken in heart. [17] As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.39 [18] As he40 clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let41 it come into his bowels42 like water, and like oil into his bones. [19] Let it be unto him as the garment43 [which] covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually. [20] [Let] this44 [be] the reward of mine adversaries from the Lord, and of them45 that speak evil against my soul. [21] But do46 thou for me, O God the Lord, for thy name’s sake: because thy mercy47 [is] good, deliver thou me. [22] For I48 [am] poor and needy, and my49 heart is wounded within me. [23] I am gone50 like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed51 up and down as the locust. [24] My knees52 are weak through fasting; and my flesh53 faileth of fatness. [25] I became also a reproach54 unto them: [when] they55 looked upon me they shaked their heads. [26] Help56 me, O Lord my God: O save me57 according to thy mercy: [27] That they may know that this [is] thy hand; [that] thou, Lord, hast done it.58 [28] Let them59 curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let60 thy servant rejoice. [29] Let mine adversaries be clothed61 with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle. [30] I will greatly62 praise the Lord with my mouth; yea, I will praise63 him among the multitude. [31] For he64 shall stand at the right hand of the poor65, to save66 [him] from those that condemn67 his soul.

  1. am 2942, bc 1062 It is generally supposed that this Psalm was composed by David, when persecuted by Saul, who was rendered more implacable by the base and malicious calumnies of Doeg and others; though some are of opinion, that it was written when David fled from Absalom, and that Ahithophel, rather than Doeg, is the typical person against whom it is principally directed.

  2. Ps 109:1, David, complaining of his slanderous enemies, under the person of Judas devotes them; Ps 109:16, He shews their sin; Ps 109:21, Complaining of his own misery, he prays for help; Ps 109:29, He promises thankfulness.

  15. Dr. Sykes, Michaelis, and others, contend that these imprecations are those of David's enemies against himself; and they would render, "Set, say they, a wicked," etc, but this is rendered highly improbable by the Ps 109:8 being applied by St. Peter to the traitor Judas, of whom David was certainly not a type. (See Ps 109:20.) Bp. Horsley and others, however, render the verbs in the future tense, the first verb alone being in the imperative; justly considering the Psalmist as merely uttering prophetic denunciations of God's displeasure against sinners.
