⥃Loving Discipline and Knowledge
[1] Whoso loveth1 instruction loveth knowledge: but he that2 hateth reproof [is] brutish. [2] A good3 [man] obtaineth favour of the Lord: but a man4 of wicked devices will he condemn. [3] A man shall not be established5 by wickedness: but the root6 of the righteous shall not be moved. [4] A virtuous7 woman [is] a crown to her husband: but she8 that maketh as9hamed [is] as rottenness in his bones. [5] The thoughts10 of the righteous [are] right: [but] the counsels11 of the wicked [are] deceit. [6] The words12 of the wicked [are] to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth13 of the upright shall deliver them. [7] The wicked14 are overthrown, and [are] not: but the house15 of the righteous shall stand. [8] A man shall be commended16 according to his wisdom: but he17 that is of a perverse heart18 shall be despised. [9] [He that is19] despised20, and hath a servant, [is] better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread. [10] A righteous21 [man] regardeth the life of his beast: but22 the tender mercies23 of the wicked [are] cruel. [11] He that tilleth24 his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth25 vain [persons is] void of understanding. [12] The wicked desireth26 the net27 of evil [men]: but the root28 of the righteous yieldeth [fruit]. [13] The wicked is snared by the transgression of [his] lips29: but30 the just shall come out of trouble. [14] A man shall be satisfied31 with good by the fruit of [his] mouth: and32 the recompence of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him. [15] The way33 of a fool [is] right in his own eyes: but34 he that hearkeneth unto counsel [is] wise. [16] A fool’s35 wrath is presently36 known: but37 a prudent [man] covereth shame. [17] [He that38] speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but39 a false witness deceit. [18] There is that40 speaketh like41 the piercings of a sword: but42 the tongue of the wise [is] health. [19] The lip43 of truth shall be established for ever: but44 a lying tongue [is] but for a moment. [20] Deceit45 [is] in the heart of them that imagine evil: but46 to the counsellors of peace [is] joy. [21] There shall no47 evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled48 with mischief. [22] Lying49 lips [are] abomination to the Lord: but50 they that deal truly [are] his delight. [23] A prudent51 man concealeth knowledge: but52 the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness. [24] The hand53 of the diligent shall bear rule: but54 the slothful55 shall be under tribute. [25] Heaviness56 in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but57 a good word maketh it glad. [26] The righteous58 [is] more excellent59 than his neighbour: but60 the way of the wicked seduceth them. [27] The slothful61 [man] roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but62 the substance of a diligent man [is] precious. [28] In the way of righteousness [is] life; and [in] the pathway [thereof there is] no death. 63

etc. Or, rather, as in the old translation "He that is despised, and is his own servant, is better than he that boasteth himself and wanteth bread;" with which the versions generally agree. That is, it is better to be in lowness and obscurity, and to support oneself by manual labour, than to want the necessaries of life, through a foolish vanity, or the pride of birth, which refuses to labour. ↩
