⥃Solomon’s Proverbs: The Wise Son
[1] The proverbs2 of Solomon. A wise3 son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son [is] the heaviness of his mother. [2] Treasures4 of wickedness profit nothing: but5 righteousness delivereth from death. [3] The Lord will6 not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but7 he casteth away the substance of the wicked8. [4] He becometh9 poor that dealeth [with] a slack hand10: but11 the hand of the diligent maketh rich. [5] He that gathereth12 in summer [is] a wise son: [but] he that sleepeth in harvest [is] a son13 that causeth shame. [6] Blessings14 [are] upon the head of the just: but violence15 covereth the mouth of the wicked. [7] The memory16 of the just [is] blessed: but the name17 of the wicked shall rot. [8] The wise18 in heart will receive commandments: but19 a prating fool20 shall fall21. [9] He that walketh22 uprightly walketh surely: but23 he that perverteth his ways shall be known. [10] He that24 winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but25 a prating fool shall fall26. [11] The mouth of a27 righteous [man is] a well of life: but28 violence covereth the mouth of the wicked. [12] Hatred29 stirreth up strifes: but love30 covereth all sins. [13] In the lips31 of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod32 [is] for the back of him that is void of understanding33. [14] Wise [men] lay34 up knowledge: but the mouth35 of the foolish [is] near destruction. [15] The rich36 man’s wealth [is] his strong city: the destruction37 of the poor [is] their poverty. [16] The labour38 of the righteous [tendeth] to life: the fruit39 of the wicked to sin. [17] He [is in] the way40 of life that keepeth instruction: but he that41 refuseth reproof erreth42. [18] He that hideth43 hatred [with] lying lips, and he that uttereth44 a slander, [is] a fool. [19] In the multitude45 of words there wanteth not sin: but46 he that refraineth his lips [is] wise. [20] The tongue47 of the just [is as] choice silver: the heart48 of the wicked [is] little worth. [21] The lips of the righteous feed49 many: but fools50 die for want of wisdom51. [22] The blessing of the Lord, it52 maketh rich, and he53 addeth no sorrow with it. [23] [It is] as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.54 [24] The fear55 of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire56 of the righteous shall be granted. [25] As the whirlwind57 passeth, so [is] the wicked no [more]: but the righteous [is] an58 everlasting foundation. [26] As vinegar59 to the teeth, and as smoke60 to the eyes, so61 [is] the sluggard to them that send him. [27] The fear62 of the Lord prolongeth63 days: but the years64 of the wicked shall be shortened. [28] The hope65 of the righteous [shall be] gladness: but66 the expectation of the wicked shall perish. [29] The way67 of the Lord [is] strength to the upright: but68 destruction [shall be] to the workers of iniquity. [30] The righteous shall never69 be removed: but the wicked70 shall not inhabit the earth. [31] The mouth71 of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward72 tongue shall be cut out. [32] The lips of the righteous know73 what is acceptable: but74 the mouth of the wicked [speaketh] frowardness75.

As the acidity of vinegar causes the unpleasantness and pain to the teeth, and by softening and dissolving the alkali of the bone, impairs their texture, and renders them incapable of mastication; and as smoke, by irritating the tender vessels, causes the eyes to smart, and prevents distinct vision; so a sluggish messenger is a continual vexation and loss to those by whom he is employed.
