⥃The Living Stone and Chosen People ^{[ Isaiah 28:14–22 † 1 Corinthians 3:10–15 † Ephesians 2:19–22 ]}

[1] Wherefore² laying³ aside all malice⁴, and all guile⁵, and hypocrisies⁶, and envies⁷, and all evil⁸ speakings, [2] As newborn⁹ babes, desire the sincere¹⁰ milk of the word, that ye may grow¹¹ thereby: [3] If so be ye have tasted that the Lord [is] gracious.¹² [4] To¹³ whom coming, [as unto] a living¹⁴ stone¹⁵, disallowed¹⁶ indeed of men, but chosen¹⁷ of God, [and] precious¹⁸, [5] Ye also¹⁹, as lively stones, are built²⁰ up a spiritual house, an holy²¹ priesthood, to offer up spiritual²² sacrifices, acceptable²³ to God by Jesus Christ. [6] Wherefore also it²⁴ is contained in the scripture, Behold²⁵, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect²⁶, precious: and he that believeth on him shall²⁷ not be confounded. [7] Unto you²⁸ therefore which believe [he is] precious²⁹: but unto them which be³⁰ disobedient, the stone³¹ which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head³² of the corner, [8] And a stone³³ of stumbling, and a rock of offence, [even to them] which stumble at the word, being³⁴ disobedient: whereunto³⁵ also they were appointed. [9] But ye [are] a chosen³⁶ generation, a royal³⁷ priesthood, an holy³⁸ nation, a peculiar³⁹ people; that ye should shew⁴⁰ forth the praises⁴¹ of him who⁴² hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: [10] Which in time past [were⁴³] not a people, but [are] now the people of God: which had not obtained⁴⁴ mercy, but now have obtained mercy. [11] Dearly beloved, I beseech⁴⁵ [you] as⁴⁶ strangers and pilgrims, abstain⁴⁷ from fleshly lusts, which war⁴⁸ against the soul; [12] Having your conversation⁴⁹ honest⁵⁰ among⁵¹ the Gentiles: that⁵², whereas⁵³ they speak against you as evildoers, they may⁵⁴ by [your] good works, which they shall behold, glorify⁵⁵ God in the day⁵⁶ of visitation.

⥃Submission to Authorities ^{[ Romans 13:1–7 ]}

[13] Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;⁵⁷ [14] Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment⁵⁸ of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. [15] For so⁵⁹ is the will of God, that with⁶⁰ well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance⁶¹ of foolish⁶² men: [16] As free⁶³, and⁶⁴ not using⁶⁵ [your] liberty for a cloke⁶⁶ of maliciousness, but⁶⁷ as the servants of God. [17] Honour⁶⁸ all [men]. Love⁶⁹ the brotherhood. Fear⁷⁰ God. Honour⁷¹ the king. [18] Servants, [be⁷²] subject to [your] masters with all fear; not only to the good⁷³ and gentle, but⁷⁴ also to the froward. [19] For this⁷⁵ [is] thankworthy⁷⁶, if a man for conscience⁷⁷ toward God endure grief, suffering⁷⁸ wrongfully. [20] For⁷⁹ what glory [is it], if, when ye be buffeted⁸⁰ for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when⁸¹ ye do well, and suffer [for it], ye take it patiently, this⁸² [is] acceptable⁸³ with God.

⥃Christ’s Example of Suffering ^{[ Isaiah 53:1–8 ]}

[21] For even⁸⁴ hereunto were ye called: because⁸⁵ Christ also suffered for us⁸⁶, leaving⁸⁷ us an example, that ye should follow his steps: [22] Who did⁸⁸ no sin, neither was guile⁸⁹ found in his mouth: [23] Who, when he was⁹⁰ reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened⁹¹ not; but⁹² committed [himself⁹³] to him that judgeth⁹⁴ righteously: [24] Who his own self⁹⁵ bare our sins in his own body on⁹⁶ the tree⁹⁷, that we, being⁹⁸ dead to sins, should live⁹⁹ unto righteousness: by¹⁰⁰ whose stripes ye were healed¹⁰¹. [25] For ye¹⁰² were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd¹⁰³ and Bishop¹⁰⁴ of your souls.
