⥃Saul Persecutes the Church
[1] And Saul2 was consenting unto his death. And at that time there3 was a great persecution against the church4 which was at Jerusalem; and they5 were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria6, except7 the apostles. [2] And devout8 men carried Stephen [to his burial], and made9 great lamentation over him. [3] As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed [them] to prison.10
⥃Philip in Samaria
[4] Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.11 [5] Then Philip12 went down to the city13 of Samaria, and preached14 Christ unto them. [6] And the people with one15 accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. [7] For unclean16 spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed [with them]: and many taken with palsies17, and that were lame18, were healed. [8] And there was great joy in that city.19
⥃Simon the Sorcerer [ Deuteronomy 18:9–14 ]
[9] But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used20 sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving21 out that himself was some great one: [10] To whom they22 all gave heed, from23 the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power24 of God. [11] And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had25 bewitched them with sorceries. [12] But when they believed26 Philip preaching the things concerning27 the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both28 men and women. [13] Then Simon29 himself believed30 also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered31, beholding the miracles and signs32 which were done. [14] Now when33 the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received34 the word of God, they sent unto them Peter35 and John: [15] Who, when they were come down, prayed36 for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: [16] (For as yet he was37 fallen upon none of them: only38 they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) [17] Then laid39 they [their] hands on them, and they received40 the Holy Ghost. [18] And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered41 them money, [19] Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.42 [20] But Peter said unto him, Thy43 money perish with thee, because thou44 hast thought that the gift45 of God may be purchased with money. [21] Thou hast46 neither part nor lot in this matter: for47 thy heart is not right in the sight of God. [22] Repent48 therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray49 God, if50 perhaps the thought51 of thine heart may be forgiven thee. [23] For I perceive that thou art in the gall52 of bitterness, and [in] the bond53 of iniquity. [24] Then answered Simon, and said, Pray54 ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. [25] And they, when they had55 testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages56 of the Samaritans.
⥃Philip and the Ethiopian [ Isaiah 53:1–8 ]
[26] And the angel57 of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise58, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza59, which is desert60. [27] And he arose61 and went: and, behold, a man62 of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen63 of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had64 come to Jerusalem for to worship, [28] Was returning, and sitting65 in his chariot read Esaias66 the prophet. [29] Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.67 [30] And Philip ran thither68 to [him], and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest69 thou what thou readest? [31] And he said, How70 can I, except some man should guide me? And he71 desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. [32] The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was72 led as a73 sheep to the slaughter; and like74 a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened75 he not his mouth: [33] In his humiliation76 his judgment77 was taken away: and who78 shall declare his generation? for79 his life is taken from the earth. [34] And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom80 speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? [35] Then Philip opened81 his mouth, and began82 at the same scripture, and preached83 unto him Jesus. [36] And as they went on [their] way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See84, [here is] water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? [37] And Philip said, If85 thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered86 and said, I believe87 that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. [38] And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized88 him. [39] And when they were89 come up out of the water, the Spirit90 of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he91 went on his way rejoicing. [40] But Philip was found at92 Azotus: and passing through he preached93 in all the cities, till he came to Cesarea94.

Rather, "to a city of Samaria," εις G1519, πολις της Σαμαρειας, for the city of Samaria had been utterly destroyed by Hyrcanus, and the city built by Herod on its site was called Σεβαστη, that is, Augusta, in honour of Augustus. Samaria comprised the tract of country formerly occupied by the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, west of Jordan, lying between Judea and Galilee, beginning, says Josephus, at Ginea in the great plain, and ending at the toparchy of Acrabateni.
