⥃Habakkuk’s Prayer

[1] A prayer² of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth³. [2] O Lord, I have⁴ heard thy speech⁵, [and] was afraid: O Lord⁶, revive⁷ thy work in the⁸ midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath⁹ remember mercy. [3] God came¹⁰ from¹¹ Teman¹², and the Holy One from mount Paran¹³. Selah¹⁴. His glory¹⁵ covered the heavens, and the earth¹⁶ was full of his praise. [4] And [his] brightness¹⁷ was as the light; he had horns [coming] out of his hand¹⁸: and there [was] the hiding¹⁹ of his power. [5] Before him went²⁰ the pestilence, and²¹ burning coals²² went forth at his feet. [6] He stood, and measured²³ the earth: he beheld, and drove²⁴ asunder the nations; and the everlasting²⁵ mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his²⁶ ways [are] everlasting. [7] I saw the²⁷ tents of Cushan²⁸ in affliction²⁹: [and] the curtains of the land of Midian³⁰ did tremble. [8] Was the Lord³¹ displeased against the rivers? [was] thine anger against the rivers? [was] thy wrath against the sea, that thou didst ride³² upon thine horses [and] thy chariots of salvation³³? [9] Thy bow³⁴ was made quite naked, [according³⁵] to the oaths of the tribes, [even thy] word. Selah³⁶. Thou³⁷ didst cleave the earth with rivers³⁸. [10] The mountains³⁹ saw thee, [and] they trembled: the overflowing⁴⁰ of the water passed by: the deep⁴¹ uttered his voice, [and] lifted up his hands on high. [11] The sun⁴² [and] moon stood still in their habitation⁴³: at the light of thine arrows they went⁴⁴, [and] at the shining of thy glittering spear. [12] Thou didst march⁴⁵ through the land in indignation, thou didst thresh⁴⁶ the heathen in anger. [13] Thou wentest⁴⁷ forth for the salvation of thy people, [even] for salvation with⁴⁸ thine anointed; thou woundedst⁴⁹ the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering⁵⁰ the foundation unto the neck. Selah. [14] Thou didst strike through with his staves the head⁵¹ of his villages: they⁵² came out⁵³ as a whirlwind to scatter me: their⁵⁴ rejoicing [was] as to devour the poor secretly. [15] Thou didst walk⁵⁵ through the sea with thine horses, [through] the heap⁵⁶ of great waters. [16] When I heard⁵⁷, my belly⁵⁸ trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I⁵⁹ might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will⁶⁰ invade them⁶¹ with his troops.

⥃Habakkuk Rejoices

[17] [¶]Although the fig tree⁶² shall not blossom, neither [shall] fruit [be] in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail⁶³, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and [there shall be] no herd in the stalls: [18] Yet I will rejoice⁶⁴ in the Lord, I will joy in the God⁶⁵ of my salvation. [19] The Lord God [is] my strength⁶⁶, and he will make my feet like⁶⁷ hinds’ [feet], and he will make me to walk⁶⁸ upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments⁶⁹.
