The Descendants of Esau[ 1 Chronicles 1:35–37 ]

[1] Now these [are] the generations of Esau, who [is] Edom.2 [2] Esau3 took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah4 the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah5 the daughter6 of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; [3] And Bashemath Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth.7 [4] And Adah8 bare to Esau Eliphaz9; and Bashemath bare Reuel10; [5] And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these [are] the sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land11 of Canaan. [6] And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons12 of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went13 into the country from the face of his brother Jacob.14 [7] For their riches15 were more than that they might dwell together; and the land16 wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle. [8] Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir17: Esau18 [is] Edom.

[9] And these [are] the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites19 in mount Seir: [10] These [are] the names of Esau’s sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.20 [11] And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho21, and Gatam, and Kenaz.22 [12] And Timna23 was concubine to Eliphaz Esau’s son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek24: these [were] the sons of Adah Esau’s wife. [13] And these [are] the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife.25

[14] [¶]And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau’s wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.26

[15] [¶]These [were] dukes27 of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz28 the firstborn [son] of Esau; duke Teman29, duke Omar, duke Zepho, duke Kenaz,30 [16] Duke31 Korah32, duke Gatam, [and] duke Amalek: these [are] the dukes [that came] of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these [were] the sons of Adah.

[17] [¶]And these [are] the sons of Reuel33 Esau’s son; duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah: these [are] the dukes [that came] of Reuel in the land of Edom; these [are] the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife.

[18] [¶]And these [are] the sons of Aholibamah Esau’s wife; duke Jeush, duke Jaalam, duke Korah: these [were] the dukes [that came] of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau’s wife.34 [19] These [are] the sons of Esau, who [is] Edom35, and these [are] their dukes.

The Descendants of Seir[ 1 Chronicles 1:38–42 ]

[20] These [are] the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah,36 [21] And Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan: these [are] the dukes of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom.37 [22] And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam38; and Lotan’s sister [was] Timna39.40 [23] And the children of Shobal [were] these; Alvan41, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho42, and Onam. [24] And these [are] the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this [was that] Anah that found43 the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father. [25] And the children of Anah [were] these; Dishon44, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah45. [26] And these [are] the children of Dishon; Hemdan46, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran. [27] The children of Ezer47 [are] these; Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan48. [28] The children of Dishan [are] these; Uz49, and Aran. [29] These [are] the dukes [that came] of the Horites50; duke Lotan51, duke Shobal, duke Zibeon, duke Anah, [30] Duke Dishon, duke Ezer, duke Dishan: these [are] the dukes [that came] of Hori, among their dukes in the52 land of Seir.53

The Kings of Edom[ 1 Chronicles 1:43–54 ]

[31] And these [are] the kings54 that reigned in the land of Edom, before there55 reigned any king over the children of Israel. [32] And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name of his city [was] Dinhabah. [33] And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah56 reigned in his stead.57 [34] And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani58 reigned in his stead.59 [35] And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city [was] Avith.60 [36] And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.61 [37] And Samlah died, and Saul of Rehoboth62 [by] the river reigned in his stead.63 [38] And Saul died, and Baal–hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.64 [39] And Baal–hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar65 reigned in his stead: and the name of his city [was] Pau; and his wife’s name [was] Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.66 [40] And these [are] the names of the dukes67 [that came] of Esau, according to their families, after their places, by their names; duke Timnah, duke Alvah68, duke Jetheth,69 [41] Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon, [42] Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar, [43] Duke Magdiel, duke Iram: these [be] the dukes70 of Edom, according to their71 habitations in the land of their possession: he [is] Esau the father72 of the Edomites73.

  27. The word duke is from the Latin dux, a captain or leader, from duco, to lead, guide; which is the exact import of the Hebrew (ΰμεσ ( ‎אַלּוּף‎ )), alluph, from ΰμσ, to lead, guide; and is here applied to heads of families, chieftains, or princes, who were military leaders. As it is certain from Gen 36:4, that Eliphaz was Esau's son by Adah, and from Gen 36:11 and Gen 36:12, that Eliphaz had but six sons, "Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, Kenaz, and Amalek;" as is is also certain, from Gen 36:5 and Gen 36:14, that Korah was the son of Esau (not Eliphaz) by Aholibamah; and as the words duke Korah are omitted by both the Samaritan text and version, Dr. Kennicott pronounces them to be an interpolation.

  56. Bozrah, Bezer, or Bostra, was situated in Arabia Deserta, and the eastern part of Edom; and, according to Eusebius, was 24 miles from Edrei. It afterwards belonged to Moab, and was given by Moses to Reuben, but again reverted to Edom. It is now called Boszra; and is described by Burckhardt as the largest town in the Haouran, including its ruins, though only inhabited by about twelve or fifteen families. It is situated in the open plain, two hours distant from Aare, and is at present the last inhabited place in the south-east extremity of the Haouran. It is of an oval shape, it greatest length being from east to west; and its circumference three quarters of an hour. Isa 34:6, Isa 63:1; Jer 49:13, Jer 49:22; Amos 1:12; Mic 2:12
