⥃The Burden against Egypt

[1] The burden of Egypt2. Behold, the Lord rideth3 upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols4 of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart5 of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it. [2] And I will6 set7 the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, [and] kingdom against kingdom. [3] And the spirit8 of Egypt shall fail9 in the midst thereof; and I10 will destroy11 the counsel thereof: and they12 shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards. [4] And the Egyptians will I give over13 into the hand of a cruel lord14; and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts. [5] And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up.15 [6] And the16y shall turn the rivers far away; [and] the brooks of defence shall be emptied and dried up: the reeds17 and flags shall wither. [7] The paper reeds by the brooks, by the mouth of the brooks, and every18 thing sown by the brooks, shall wither, be driven away, and be no [more19]. [8] The fishers also shall mourn, and all they that cast angle into the brooks shall lament, and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish.20 [9] Moreover they that work21 in fine flax, and they that weave networks, shall be confounded. [10] And they shall be broken in the purposes22 thereof, all that make23 sluices [and] ponds for fish24.

[11] [¶]Surely the princes25 of Zoan26 [are] fools, the counsel of the wise counsellors of Pharaoh is become brutish27: how say ye unto Pharaoh, I [am28] the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings? [12] Where [are] they? where [are] thy29 wise [men]? and let them30 tell thee now, and let them know what the Lord of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt. [13] The princes of Zoan31 are become fools, the princes of Noph32 are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, [even they that are] the stay33 of the tribes thereof. [14] The Lord hath mingled34 a perverse spirit35 in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a36 drunken [man] staggereth in his vomit. [15] Neither shall there be [any] work for Egypt, which the head or tail, branch or rush, may do.37

⥃A Blessing upon the Earth

[16] In that day shall Egypt be like38 unto women: and it shall be afraid and fear because of the shaking39 of the hand of the Lord of hosts, which he shaketh over it. [17] And the land40 of Judah shall be a terror unto Egypt, every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself, because41 of the counsel of the Lord of hosts, which he hath determined against it.

[18] In that day42 shall five43 cities in the land of Egypt speak44 the language45 of Canaan, and swear46 to the Lord of hosts; one shall be called, The city of destruction47. [19] In that day shall there be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the Lord.48 [20] And it shall be for a49 sign and for a witness unto the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall50 cry unto the Lord because of the oppressors, and he shall send51 them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them. [21] And the Lord shall52 be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the Lord in that day, and shall53 do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow54 a vow unto the Lord, and perform [it]. [22] And the Lord shall smite Egypt: he shall smite55 and heal [it]: and they shall56 return [even] to the Lord, and he shall be intreated of them, and shall heal them.

[23] [¶]In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.57 [24] In that day shall58 Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, [even] a blessing59 in the midst of the land: [25] Whom the Lord60 of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed61 [be] Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel62 mine inheritance.

This is a prophecy of what took place in Egypt about twenty-two years after the destruction of Sennacherib's army; when, upon the death of Tirhakah (bc 688), not being able to settle about the succession, they continued for two years in a state of anarchy, confusion, and civil wars; which was followed by the tyranny of twelve princes, who, dividing the country among them, governed it for fifteen years; and at last, by the sole dominion of Psammiticus, which he held for fifty-four years. Heres, or, the sun, Instead of heres "destruction," which is also the reading of Aquila, Theodotion, and the Syriac, fifteen manuscripts and seven editions have cheres "the sun;" agreeable to Symmachus, the Arabic, and Vulgate; while the Chaldee takes in both readings; and the LXX reads πολις ασεδεκ, "the city of righteousness," a name apparently contrived by the party of Onias, to give credit to his temple. As, however, heres in Arabic signifies a lion, Conrad Ikenius is of opinion that the place here mentioned is not Heliopolis, as is commonly supposed, but Leontopolis in the Heliopolitan nome, as it is termed in the letter of Onias to Ptolemy. The whole passage, from this verse to the end, contains a general intimation of the propagation of the knowledge of the true God in Egypt and Syria, under the successors of Alexander, and the early reception of the gospel in the same countries. ↩
