⥃Eliphaz: The Innocent Prosper
[1] Then Eliphaz2 the Temanite answered3 and said, [2] [If] we assay to commune4 with thee, wilt thou5 be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking6? [3] Behold7, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast8 strengthened the weak hands. [4] Thy words have upholden9 him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees10. [5] But now it is come11 upon thee, and thou faintest12; it toucheth13 thee, and thou art troubled. [6] [Is] not [this] thy fear14, thy confidence15, thy hope16, and the uprightness17 of thy ways? [7] Remember, I pray thee, who [ever18] perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off? [8] Even as I have seen, they that plow19 iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. [9] By the blast20 of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils21 are they consumed. [10] The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth22 of the young lions, are broken. [11] The old lion23 perisheth24 for lack of prey, and the stout25 lion’s whelps are scattered abroad. [12] Now a thing26 was secretly27 brought to me, and mine ear received a little28 thereof. [13] In thoughts29 from the visions of the night, when deep sleep30 falleth on men, [14] Fear31 came upon32 me, and trembling, which made all my bones33 to shake. [15] Then a spirit34 passed before my face; the hair35 of my flesh stood up: [16] It stood still, but I could not discern the form there36of: an image [was] before mine eyes, [there was] silence, and I heard a voice, [saying], [17] Shall mortal37 man be more just than God? shall a man38 be more pure than his maker? [18] Behold, he put39 no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly40: [19] How much less [in] them that dwell41 in houses of clay, whose foundation [is] in the dust, [which] are crushed42 before the moth? [20] They are destroyed43 from morning44 to evening: they perish45 for ever without46 any regarding [it]. [21] Doth not their excellency47 [which is] in them go away? they die48, even without wisdom.
