⥃The Table of Nations [ 1 Chronicles 1:4–27 ]
[1] Now these [are] the2 generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto3 them were sons born after the flood.
⥃The Japhethites
[2] The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.4 [3] And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. [4] And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim5, and Dodanim6.7 [5] By these were the isles8 of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his9 tongue, after their families, in their nations.10
⥃The Hamites
[6] And the11 sons of Ham12; Cush13, and Mizraim, and Phut14, and Canaan.15 [7] And the sons of Cush; Seba16, and Havilah17, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecha: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba18, and Dedan19. [8] And Cush begat Nimrod20: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.21 [9] He was a mighty22 hunter before the Lord23: wherefore it is said, Even24 as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord. [10] And the25 beginning of his kingdom was Babel26, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh27, in the land of Shinar28.29 [11] Out of that land went forth Asshur3031, and builded Nineveh32, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah,33 [12] And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same [is] a great city. [13] And Mizraim begat Ludim34, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, [14] And Pathrusim35, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim36,) and Caphtorim37.
[15] And Canaan38 begat Sidon39 his firstborn, and Heth40, [16] And the Jebusite41, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite, [17] And the Hivite42, and the Arkite, and the Sinite, [18] And the Arvadite43, and the Zemarite44, and the Hamathite45: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad. [19] And the46 border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest47 to Gerar48, unto Gaza49; as thou goest, unto Sodom50, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha. [20] These [are] the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, [and] in their nations.51
⥃The Semites
[21] Unto Shem52 also, the father53 of all the children of Eber54, the brother55 of Japheth the elder, even to him were [children] born. [22] The children56 of Shem; Elam57, and Asshur, and Arphaxad58, and Lud59, and Aram60. [23] And the children of Aram; Uz61, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash. [24] And Arphaxad begat Salah62; and Salah begat Eber. [25] And unto Eber63 were born two sons: the name64 of one [was] Peleg65; for in66 his days was the earth divided; and his brother’s name [was] Joktan.67 [26] And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,68 [27] And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,69 [28] And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba,70 [29] And Ophir71, and Havilah72, and Jobab: all these [were] the sons of Joktan. [30] And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east73. [31] These [are] the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.74 [32] These [are] the75 families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by76 these were the nations77 divided in the earth after the flood.

Ham signifies burnt or black; and this name was peculiarly significant of the regions allotted to his family. To the Cushites, or descendants of Cush, were allotted the hot southern regions of Asia, along the shores of the Persian Gulf, Susiana or Chusistan, etc.; to the sons of Canaan, Palestine and Syria; to the sons of Mizraim, Egypt and Libya, in Africa. ↩

Shem signifies name or renown; and his, indeed, was great both in a temporal and spiritual sense, inasmuch as he was destined to be the lineal ancestor of the promised Seed of the woman, to which Noah might allude in his pious ejaculation, Gen 9:26. ↩

Any man who can barely read his Bible, and has but heard of such people as the Assyrians, Elamites, Lydians, Medes, Ionians, and Thracians, will readily acknowledge that Asshur, Elam, Lud, Madai, Javan, and Tiras, grandsons of Noah, were their respective founders. ↩
