The Genealogy of Jesus[ Ruth 4:18–22 Luke 3:23–38 ]

[1] The book of the generation3 of Jesus Christ, the son of David4, the son of Abraham5. [2] Abraham6 begat Isaac; and Isaac begat7 Jacob; and Jacob begat8 Judas and his brethren; [3] And Judas9 begat Phares and Zara of Thamar10; and Phares11 begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram12; [4] And Aram begat Aminadab13; and Aminadab begat Naasson14; and Naasson begat Salmon; [5] And Salmon15 begat Booz of Rachab16; and Booz17 begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat18 Jesse; [6] And Jesse19 begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon20 of her21 [that had been the wife] of Urias22; [7] And Solomon begat Roboam23; and Roboam begat Abia24; and Abia begat Asa25; [8] And Asa begat Josaphat26; and Josaphat begat Joram27; and Joram begat Ozias28; [9] And Ozias begat Joatham29; and Joatham begat Achaz30; and Achaz begat Ezekias31; [10] And Ezekias begat Manasses32; and Manasses begat Amon33; and Amon begat Josias34; [11] And Josias35 begat Jechonias36 and his brethren, about37 the time they were carried away to Babylon: [12] And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias38 begat Salathiel; and39 Salathiel begat Zorobabel; [13] And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; [14] And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; [15] And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; [16] And Jacob begat Joseph40 the husband of Mary, of who41m42 was born Jesus, who is called Christ. [17] So all the generations from Abraham to David [are] fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon [are] fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ [are] fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus[ Isaiah 7:10–16 Luke 2:1–7 ]

[18] Now the birth43 of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the44 Holy Ghost. [19] Then Joseph her husband45, being a just46 [man], and not willing to make her a public47k example, was48 minded to put her away privily. [20] But while49 he thought on these things, behold, the angel50 of the Lord appeared unto him in51 a dream, saying, Joseph52, thou son of David, fear not53 to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that54 which is conceived55 in her is of the Holy Ghost. [21] And she56 shall bring forth a son, and thou57 shalt call his name JESUS58: for59 he shall save his people from their sins. [22] Now all this was done, that60 it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, [23] Behold, a virgin61 shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name62 Emmanuel63, which being interpreted is, God64 with us. [24] Then Joseph being raised from sleep did65 as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: [25] And knew her not till she66 had brought forth her firstborn son: and he67 called his name JESUS.

  1. Matthew, being one of the twelve apostles, and early called to the apostleship, and from the time of his call a constant attendant on our Saviour, was perfectly well qualified to write fully the history of his life. He relates what he saw and heard. “He is eminently distinguished for the distinctness and particularity with which he has related many of our Lord’s discourses and moral instructions. Of these his sermon on the mount, his charge to the apostles, his illustrations of the nature of his kingdom, and his prophecy on mount Olivet, are examples. He has also wonderfully united simplicity and energy in relating the replies of his Master to the cavils of his adversaries.” “There is not,” as Dr. A. Clarke justly remarks, “one truth or doctrine, in the whole oracles of God, which is not taught in this Evangelist. The outlines of the whole spiritual system are here correctly laid down. Even Paul himself has added nothing. He has amplified and illustrated the truths contained in this Gospel - under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, neither he, nor any of the other apostles, have brought to light one truth, the prototype of which has not been found in the words and acts of our blessed Lord as related by Matthew.”

  2. Matt 1:1, The genealogy of Christ from Abraham to Joseph; Matt 1:18, He is miraculously conceived of the Holy Ghost by the Virgin Mary, when she was espoused to Joseph; Matt 1:19, The angel satisfies the doubts of Joseph, and declares the names and office of Christ: Jesus is born.
