⥃Jacob’s Journey to Egypt
[1] And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer–sheba2, and offered3 sacrifices unto4 the God of his father Isaac.5 [2] And God spake unto Israel in the visions6 of the night, and said, Jacob7, Jacob. And he said, Here [am] I. [3] And he said, I [am] God, the God8 of thy father: fear not9 to go down into Egypt; for I will10 there make of thee a great nation: [4] I will go11 down with thee into Egypt; and I will12 also surely bring thee up [again]: and Joseph13 shall put his hand upon thine eyes. [5] And Jacob14 rose up from Beer–sheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons15 which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. [6] And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt16, Jacob, and all his seed with him:

[8] [¶]And these [are] the names17 of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben18, Jacob’s firstborn. [9] And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.

[14] [¶]And the sons of Zebulun30; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel. [15] These [be] the sons of Leah31, which she bare unto Jacob in Padan–aram32, with his33 daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters [were] thirty and three.
⥃The Children of Zilpah

[17] [¶]And the sons of Asher38; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel. [18] These [are] the sons of Zilpah39, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, [even] sixteen souls.
⥃The Children of Rachel
[19] The sons of Rachel40 Jacob’s wife; Joseph41, and Benjamin.
[20] [¶]And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh42 and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Poti–pherah priest43 of On bare unto him.
[21] [¶]And the sons44 of Benjamin [were] Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi45, and Rosh, Muppim46, and Huppim47, and Ard. [22] These [are] the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls [were] fourteen.
⥃The Children of Bilhah
[23] [¶]And the sons of Dan48; Hushim49.
[24] [¶]And the sons of Naphtali50; Jahzeel51, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem. [25] These [are] the sons of Bilhah52, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls [were] seven. [26] All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins53, besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the souls [were] threescore and six; [27] And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, [were] two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, [were] threescore and ten54.
⥃Jacob Arrives in Egypt
[28] And he sent Judah55 before him unto Joseph, to direct56 his face unto Goshen57; and they came into the land of Goshen. [29] And Joseph made ready his chariot58, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on59 his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. [30] And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou [art] yet alive.60 [31] And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father’s house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father’s house, which [were] in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;61 [32] And the men [are] shepherds62, for their trade hath been to feed cattle63; and they64 have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. [33] And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What [is65] your occupation? [34] That ye shall say, Thy servants’66 trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, [and] also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every67 shepherd [is] an abomination unto the Egyptians.

This last and most solemn office, as Mr. Hewlett observes, that could be paid to a parent, was generally performed by the nearest relation of the deceased. This promise must have given great consolation to the venerable patriarch's mind. Gen 50:1 ↩

Threescore and six were before mentioned (Gen 46:26), so that Joseph and his two sons, together with Jacob himself, complete the seventy persons here enumerated; and the number in Gen 46:15, Gen 46:18, Gen 46:22, and Gen 46:25 amount to that number. The addition of five persons in the LXX in Gen 46:20, was either the cause or the consequence of another difference here; for in that version the number is seventy-five (Gen 46:15, Gen 46:18, Gen 46:22, Gen 46:25). Goshen seems to have been a city, after which the land of Goshen was called. The LXX render it by Ηρωωνπολις, Heroonpolis, "city of Heroon;" which by some writers is simply called Heroum, and is by the ancient geographers placed in the eastern part of Egypt, not far from the Arabian Gulf. From the fragments of Manetho, preserved in Josephus and Africanus, it appears that hordes of marauders, call hycassos, or shepherd kings, whose chief occupation, like the Bedouin Arabs of the present day, was to keep flocks, made a powerful irruption into Egypt, which they subdued, and ruled, by a succession of kings, with great tyranny for 259 years. Hence the persons, and even the very name of shepherds were execrated, and held in the greatest odium by the Egyptians. Gen 43:32; Exod 8:26 ↩
