⥃Amaziah Reigns in Judah [ 2 Chronicles 25:1–4 ]
[1] In the second year of Joash2 son of Jehoahaz king of Israel reigned Amaziah3 the son of Joash king of Judah.4 [2] He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name [was] Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. [3] And he did5 [that which was] right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father: he did according6 to all things as Joash his father did.7 [4] Howbeit the high places8 were not taken away: as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places.
[5] [¶]And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he slew9 his servants10 which had slain the king his father.11 [6] But the children of the murderers he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers12 shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin. [7] He slew13 of Edom in the valley of salt14 ten thousand, and took Selah15 by war, and called the name of it Joktheel16 unto this day.17
⥃Jehoash Defeats Amaziah [ 2 Chronicles 25:17–24 ]
[8] Then Amaziah18 sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come19, let us look one another in the face.20 [9] And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle21 that [was] in Lebanon sent to the cedar that [was] in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that [was] in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle. [10] Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thine heart22 hath lifted thee up: glory [of this23], and tarry at home24: for why shouldest25 thou meddle to [thy] hurt, that thou shouldest fall, [even] thou, and Judah with thee? [11] But Amaziah26 would not hear. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth–shemesh27, which [belongeth] to Judah. [12] And Judah was put to the worse28 before Israel; and they fled29 every man to their tents. [13] And Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah30 king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah, at Beth–shemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim31 unto the corner32 gate, four hundred cubits. [14] And he took all the gold33 and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and hostages34, and returned to Samaria.
⥃Jeroboam II Succeeds Jehoash in Israel
[15] Now the rest35 of the acts of Jehoash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, [are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?36 [16] And Jehoash37 slept with his fathers, and was buried38 in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam39 his son reigned in his stead.40
⥃The Death of Amaziah [ 2 Chronicles 25:25–28 ]
[17] [¶]And Amaziah41 the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.42 [18] And the rest of the acts of Amaziah, [are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?43 [19] Now they made44 a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem: and he fled to Lachish45; but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there.46 [20] And they brought him on horses: and he was buried47 at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.
⥃Azariah Succeeds Amaziah in Judah [ 2 Chronicles 26:1–2 ]
[21] [¶]And all the people of Judah took Azariah48, which [was] sixteen years old, and made him king49 instead of his father Amaziah. [22] He built Elath50, and restored it to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers.
⥃Jeroboam II Reigns in Israel
[23] In the fifteenth51 year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam52 the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign53 in Samaria, [and reigned] forty and one years.54 [24] And he did [that which was] evil in the sight55 of the Lord: he departed56 not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. [25] He restored the coast of Israel from the entering57 of Hamath unto the sea58 of the plain, according to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which he spake by the hand of his servant Jonah59, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which [was] of Gath–hepher60. [26] For the Lord saw the affliction61 of Israel, [that it was] very bitter: for [there was] not any shut62 up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel. [27] And the Lord said not63 that he would blot out64 the name of Israel from under heaven: but he saved65 them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.
[28] [¶]Now the rest66 of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damascus67, and Hamath, [which belonged] to Judah68, for Israel, [are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? [29] And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, [even] with the kings of Israel; and Zachariah69 his son reigned70 in his stead. 71

Some suppose that the Valley of Salt was south of the Dead, or Salt Sea, towards the land of Edom; and others suppose it to be the Valley of Salt, about three or four miles south-east of Palmyra, which now supplies, in a great measure, the surrounding country with salt. 2Sam 8:13; 1Chr 18:12; Ps 60:1 *title ↩

or, the rock, Selah is generally supposed to be the same as Petra, which in Greek signifies a rock, the celebrated capital of Arabia Petrea. Strabo places it three or four days' journey from Jericho, and five days' journey from the forest of palm trees on the Red Sea. Pliny places it 600 miles from Gaza, and 125 from the Persian Gulf; but Cellarius and Reland very justly consider that the numbers have been changed, and that we ought to read 125 miles from Gaza, and 600 from the Persian Gulf. Eusebius places Beerothbenejaakan 30 miles west from Petra, and Elath ten miles east; and Burckhardt discovered the ruins of this ancient city in a valley called Wady Mousa. ↩

There is a vast deal of insolent dignity in this remonstrance of Jehoash; but it has nothing conciliatory; no proposal of making amends for the injury his army had done to the unoffending inhabitants of Judah (2Chr 25:10-13). The comparatively useless thorn, which may by chance lacerate the incautious passenger, is made the emblem of the house of Judah and David, while the house of Jehu is represented by the stately cedar. ↩

Elath, the Ala or Elana of the Greek and Roman writers, was a celebrated port situated at the extremity of the eastern branch of the Red Sea, hence called the Elanitic Gulf, ten miles east from Petra, according to Eusebius, and 150; Roman miles from Gaza, according to Pliny, but 1,260 stadia, or 157 miles, according to Strabo and Marcianus Herecleota. It is now called Akaba, and is nothing but a tower or castle, surrounded by a large grove of date trees, the residence of a governor, dependent on him of Grand Cairo. 2Kgs 16:6; Deut 2:8; 1Kgs 9:26; 2Chr 26:2, Eloth ↩
