The Descendants of Reuben

[1] Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he [was2] the firstborn; but, forasmuch3 as he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright4 was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and5 the genealogy is not to be reckoned6 after the birthright.7 [2] For Judah8 prevailed above his brethren, and of him [came] the chief ruler9; but the birthright [was10] Joseph’s:) [3] The sons11, [I say], of Reuben the firstborn of Israel [were], Hanoch12, and Pallu13, Hezron14, and Carmi15. [4] The sons of Joel16; Shemaiah17 his son, Gog18 his son, Shimei19 his son,20 [5] Micah his son, Reaia his son, Baal his son, [6] Beerah21 his son, whom Tilgath–pilneser22 king of Assyria carried away [captive]: he [was] prince of the Reubenites23. [7] And his brethren by their families, when the genealogy24 of their generations was reckoned, [were] the chief, Jeiel, and Zechariah, [8] And Bela25 the son of Azaz26, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who dwelt in Aroer27, even unto Nebo28 and Baal–meon29: [9] And eastward he inhabited unto the entering30 in of the wilderness from the river Euphrates31: because32 their cattle were multiplied in the land of Gilead33. [10] And in the days of Saul they made war with the Hagarites34, who fell by their hand: and they dwelt in their tents throughout35 all the east [land] of Gilead.36

The Descendants of Gad

[11] [¶]And the children37 of Gad38 dwelt over against them, in the land of Bashan unto Salchah:39 [12] Joel40 the chief, and Shapham41 the next, and Jaanai42, and Shaphat in Bashan43. [13] And their brethren of the house of their fathers [were], Michael44, and Meshullam45, and Sheba46, and Jorai47, and Jachan48, and Zia49, and Heber, seven.50 [14] These [are] the children of Abihail51 the son of Huri52, the son of Jaroah53, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael54, the son of Jeshishai55, the son of Jahdo56, the son of Buz57; [15] Ahi58 the son of Abdiel59, the son of Guni, chief of the house of their fathers. [16] And they dwelt in Gilead60 in Bashan61, and in her towns, and in all the suburbs of Sharon62, upon their borders63. [17] All these were reckoned by genealogies64 in the days of Jotham65 king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam66 king of Israel.

[18] The sons of Reuben67, and the Gadites68, and half the tribe of Manasseh69, of valiant men70, men able to bear buckler and sword, and to shoot71 with bow, and skilful in war, [were] four and forty72 thousand seven hundred and threescore, that went73 out to the war. [19] And they made war74 with the Hagarites75, with Jetur, and Nephish76, and Nodab. [20] And they77 were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that [were] with them: for they cried78 to God in the battle79, and he was intreated of them; because80 they put their trust in him. [21] And they took away81 their cattle; of their camels82 fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of asses two thousand, and of men83 an hundred thousand. [22] For there fell down many slain, because the war [was] of God84. And they dwelt85 in their steads86 until the captivity87.

The Half-Tribe of Manasseh

[23] [¶]And the children of the half tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land: they increased from Bashan unto Baal–hermon8889 and Senir, and unto mount Hermon. [24] And these [were] the heads of the house of their fathers, even Epher, and Ishi, and Eliel, and Azriel, and Jeremiah, and Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of valour, famous men90, [and] heads of the house of their fathers.

[25] [¶]And they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went91 a whoring92 after the gods93 of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them. [26] And the God of Israel stirred up94 the spirit of Pul95 king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgath–pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, and brought them96 unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.
