<< Genesis 13 Genesis 15 >>

The War of the Kings

[1] And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar2, Arioch king of Ellasar3, Chedorlaomer king of Elam4, and Tidal king of nations;5 [2] [That these] made war with Bera king of Sodom6, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah7, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim8, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar9. [3] All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea10. [4] Twelve years they served11 Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled12. [5] And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that [were] with him, and smote the Rephaims13 in Ashteroth14 Karnaim, and the Zuzims15 in Ham, and the Emims16 in Shaveh Kiriathaim17, [6] And the Horites18 in their mount Seir, unto El–paran19, which [is] by the wilderness. [7] And they returned, and came to En–mishpat, which [is] Kadesh20, and smote all the country of the Amalekites21, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezon–tamar22. [8] And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same23 [is] Zoar;) and they join24ed battle with them in the vale of Siddim; [9] With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.25

Abram Rescues Lot

[10] And the vale of Siddim [was full of] slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell26 there; and they that remained fled to the mountain27.28 [11] And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.29 [12] And they took Lot30, Abram’s brother’s son, who31 dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

[13] And there came one32 that had escaped, and told Abram the33 Hebrew; for he dwelt34 in the plain of Mamre35 the Amorite36, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these37 [were] confederate with Abram. [14] And when Abram heard that his brother38 was taken captive, he armed39 his trained40 [servants], born41 in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued [them] unto Dan42. [15] And he43 divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote44 them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which [is] on the left hand of Damascus45. [16] And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.46

Melchizedek Blesses Abram[ Psalms 110:1–7 Hebrews 7:1–10 ]

[17] And the king of Sodom went out to47 meet him after48 his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that [were] with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which [is] the king’s49 dale. [18] And Melchizedek king50 of Salem brought forth bread51 and wine: and he [was] the priest52 of the most53 high God. [19] And he blessed54 him, and said, Blessed [be55] Abram of the most high56 God, possessor57 of heaven and earth: [20] And blessed58 be the most high God, which59 hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes60 of all. [21] And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons61, and take the goods to thyself. [22] And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift62 up mine hand unto63 the Lord, the most64 high God, the possessor65 of heaven and earth, [23] That I66 will not [take] from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that [is] thine, lest67 thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: [24] Save68 only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner69, Eshcol, and Mamre; let70 them take their portion.
