[1] Now Benjamin begat Bela2 his firstborn, Ashbel the second, and Aharah3 the third, [2] Nohah the fourth, and Rapha the fifth. [3] And the sons of Bela were, Addar4, and Gera, and Abihud, [4] And Abishua, and Naaman, and Ahoah, [5] And Gera5, and Shephuphan6, and Huram7. [6] And these [are] the sons of Ehud8: these are the heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Geba9, and they removed them to Manahath10: [7] And Naaman, and Ahiah, and Gera, he removed them, and begat Uzza, and Ahihud. [8] And Shaharaim begat [children] in the11 country of Moab, after he had12 sent them away; Hushim and Baara [were] his wives. [9] And he begat of Hodesh13 his wife, Jobab, and Zibia, and Mesha, and Malcham, [10] And Jeuz14, and Shachia15, and Mirma16. These [were] his sons, heads of the fathers. [11] And of Hushim he begat Abitub, and Elpaal. [12] The sons of Elpaal; Eber, and Misham, and Shamed, who built Ono17, and Lod18, with the towns thereof: [13] Beriah also, and Shema19, who [were] heads of the fathers20 of the inhabitants of Aijalon21, who drove away the inhabitants of Gath: [14] And Ahio, Shashak, and Jeremoth, [15] And Zebadiah, and Arad, and Ader, [16] And Michael, and Ispah, and Joha, the sons of Beriah22; [17] And Zebadiah, and Meshullam, and Hezeki, and Heber, [18] Ishmerai also, and Jezliah, and Jobab, the sons of Elpaal; [19] And Jakim, and Zichri, and Zabdi, [20] And Elienai, and Zilthai, and Eliel, [21] And Adaiah, and Beraiah, and Shimrath, the sons of Shimhi23; [22] And Ishpan, and Heber, and Eliel, [23] And Abdon, and Zichri, and Hanan, [24] And Hananiah, and Elam, and Antothijah, [25] And Iphedeiah, and Penuel, the sons of Shashak; [26] And Shamsherai, and Shehariah, and Athaliah, [27] And Jaresiah, and Eliah, and Zichri, the sons of Jeroham. [29] And at Gibeon dwelt the father26 of Gibeon; whose wife’s name [was] Maachah: [30] And his firstborn son Abdon27, and Zur, and Kish, and Baal, and Nadab, [31] And Gedor, and Ahio, and Zacher28. [32] And Mikloth begat Shimea29h. And these also dwelt with their brethren in Jerusalem, over against them.

[33] And Ner30 begat Kish31, and Kish begat Saul32, and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchi–shua, and Abinadab33, and Esh–baal34. [34] And the son of Jonathan [was] Merib–baal35; and Merib–baal begat Micah36. [35] And the sons of Micah [were], Pithon, and Melech, and Tarea37, and Ahaz. [36] And Ahaz begat Jehoadah38; and Jehoadah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza, [37] And Moza begat Binea: Rapha39 [was] his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son: [38] And Azel had six sons, whose names [are] these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these [were] the sons of Azel. [39] And the sons of Eshek his brother [were], Ulam his firstborn, Jehush the second, and Eliphelet the third. [40] And the sons of Ulam were mighty men of valour, archers40, and had many sons41, and sons’ sons, an hundred and fifty. All these [are] of the sons of Benjamin.

In the preceding verse it is said that "Hushim and Baara were his wives;" and here it said, "he begat of Hodesh his wife," etc; and then in the 1Chr 8:11, his children by Hushim are mentioned, but not a word of Baara. It is probable, therefore, that Hodesh was another name for Baara; and this is asserted by the Targumist: "And he begat of Baara, that is, of Chodesh, his wife, so called because he espoused her anew." ↩

Josephus says it was a village, not yielding to a city in greatness; and that it was one of three toparchies dismembered from Samaria, and given to the Jews. It was destroyed by Cesitus in the Jewish war, and, when rebuilt, was called Diospolis. It is now called Loudd, and is a poor village, situated in a fine plain about a league to the e-ne of Ramia. ↩

Jerusalem, the ancient capital of Judea, is situated in long. 35 degrees 20 minutes e, lat. 31 degrees 47 minutes 47 seconds n; and, according to the best authorities, 136 miles sw of Damascus, 34 miles s of Shechem or Nablous, 45 miles e of Jaffa, 27 miles n of Hebron, and about 20 miles w of Jericho. The city of Jerusalem was built on hills, and encompassed with mountains (Ps 125:2), in a stony and barren soil, and was about sixteen furlongs in length, say Strabo. The ancient city of Jebus, taken by David from the Jebusites, was not large, and stood on a mountain south of that on which the temple was erected. Here David built a new city, called the city of David, wherein was the royal palace. Between these two mountains lay the valley of Millo, filled up by David and Solomon; and after the reign of Manasseh, another city is mentioned, called the second. The Maccabees considerably enlarged Jerusalem on the north, enclosing a third hill; and Josephus mentions a fourth hill, called Bezetha, which Agrippa joined to the former.
