Israel at Mount Sinai

[1] In the third2 month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came3 they [into] the wilderness of Sinai.4 [2] For they were departed from Rephidim5, and were come [to] the desert6 of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped7 before the mount. [3] And Moses went up8 unto God, and the Lord called9 unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; [4] Ye have seen10 what I did unto the Egyptians, and [how] I bare you11 on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself. [5] Now therefore, if ye12 will obey my voice indeed, and keep13 my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar14 treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth15 [is] mine: [6] And ye shall be unto me a kingdom16 of priests, and an17 holy nation. These [are] the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

[7] [¶]And Moses came and called for the elders18 of the people, and laid19 before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him. [8] And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord.20 [9] And the Lo21rd said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the22 people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe23 thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord.

[10] [¶]And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify24 them to day and to morrow, and let them wash25 their clothes, [11] And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord26 will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. [12] And thou shalt set bounds27 unto the people round about, saying, Take28 heed to yourselves, [that ye] go [not] up into the mount, or touch29 the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death: [13] There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether30 [it be] beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet31 soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.

[14] [¶]And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified32 the people; and they washed their clothes. [15] And he said unto the people, Be ready33 against the third34 day: come not35 at [your] wives.

The LORD Visits Sinai

[16] And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders36 and lightnings, and a thick37 cloud upon the mount, and the voice38 of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people39 that [was] in the camp trembled. [17] And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.40 [18] And mount Sinai41 was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire42: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke43 of a furnace, and the whole44 mount quaked greatly.45 [19] And when46 the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses47 spake, and God48 answered him by a voice. [20] And the Lord came49 down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the Lord called Moses [up] to the top of the mount; and Moses went up50. [21] And the Lord said unto Moses, Go down, charge51 the people, lest they break52 through unto the Lord to gaze, and many of them perish. [22] And let the priests53 also, which come near to the Lord, sanctify54 themselves, lest the Lord break55 forth upon them. [23] And Moses said unto the Lord, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds56 about the mount, and sanctify it. [24] And the Lord said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou57 shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let58 not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the Lord, lest59 he break forth upon them. [25] So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them. 60

  6. Mount Sinai, called by the Arabs Jibbel Mousa, the Mountain of Moses, and sometimes by way of eminence, El Tor, the Mount, is a range of mountains in the peninsula formed by the gulfs of the Red Sea. It consists of several peaks, the principal of which are Horeb and Sinai; the former, still called Oreb, being on the west, and the latter, called Tur Sina, on the east, at the foot of which is the convent of St. Catherine. Dr. Shaw conceives that the wilderness of Sinai, properly so called, is that part which is to the eastward of this mount; so that the removal of the Israelites from Rephidim, which was on the West, to the desert of Sinai, was only removing from one part of the mountain to another.
