Sing for Joy to God Our Strength

To the chief Musician upon Gittith, [A Psalm2] of Asaph3.

[1] Sing4 aloud unto God our strength5: make6 a joyful noise unto the God7 of Jacob. [2] Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.8 [3] Blow9 up the trumpet in the new10 moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn11 feast day. [4] For this [was] a statute for Israel, [and] a law of the God of Jacob. [5] This he ordained in Joseph12 [for] a13 testimony, when he went out through14 the land of Egypt: [where15] I heard a language [that] I understood not. [6] I removed16 his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered17 from the pots18. [7] Thou calledst19 in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret20 place of thunder: I proved21 thee at the waters of Meribah22. Selah. [8] Hear23, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt24 hearken unto me; [9] There shall25 no strange26 god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god. [10] I [am27] the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open28 thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. [11] But my people29 would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none30 of me. [12] So I gave31 them up unto their own hearts’ lust32: [and] they walked33 in their own counsels. [13] Oh that34 my people had hearkened unto me, [and] Israel had walked in my ways! [14] I should35 soon have subdued their enemies, and turned36 my hand against their adversaries. [15] The haters37 of the Lord should have submitted themselves38 unto him: but their time39 should have endured for ever. [16] He should have fed40 them also with the finest of the wheat41: and with honey42 out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.

  1. Ps 81:1, An exhortation to a solemn praising of God; Ps 81:4, God challenges that duty by reason of his benefits; Ps 81:8, God, exhorting to obedience, complains of their disobedience, which proves their own hurt. Ps 8:1 *title

  2. Some suppose this Psalm to have been composed to be sung at the feast of Trumpets, before the time of David; and others think it was written at the removal of the ark to Mount Zion; but the most probable opinion is, that it was sung at the dedication of the second temple.
