⥃The Vows of the Covenant
[28] [¶]And the rest38 of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they39 that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law40 of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one41 having knowledge, and having understanding; [29] They clave42 to their brethren, their nobles, and entered43 into a curse, and into an oath, to walk44 in God’s law, which was given45 by46 Moses the servant of God, and to observe47 and do all the commandments of the Lord48 our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes; [30] And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons:49 [31] And [if] the people50 of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, [that] we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day51: and [that] we52 would leave the seventh year, and the exaction53 of every debt54. [32] Also we made ordinances for us, to charge55 ourselves yearly with the third part56 of a shekel for the service of the house of our God; [33] For the shewbread57, and for the continual meat offering, and for the continual burnt58 offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy [things], and for the sin offerings to make an atonement for Israel, and [for] all the work59 of the house of our God. [34] And we cast60 the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering61, to bring [it] into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times62 appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the Lord our God, as [it is] written63 in the law: [35] And to bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of the Lord:64 [36] Also the firstborn65 of our sons, and of our cattle, as [it is] written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto66 the priests that minister in the house of our God: [37] And [that] we should bring the firstfruits67 of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers68 of the house of our God; and the tithes69 of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage. [38] And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites70 take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe71 of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house72. [39] For the children7374 of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where [are] the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not75 forsake the house of our God.

According to the law, every one above twenty years of age was to give half a shekel to the sanctuary for a ransom for their souls. But, on account of the general poverty of the people, occasioned by their wars, and captivity, and by heavy tributes, etc., in the land of their captivity, this sum was reduced to the third part of a shekel. It was the business of the Nethinim to procure the wood for the fires of the temple, but it is probable few of them returned to their former masters after the captivity; and therefore they found it necessary to cast lots among the priests, Levites, and people, who should furnish the wood at appointed times. This bringing of the wood to the temple at last became a great day; and was constituted into a feast, called by Josephus, ξυλοφορια, "the carrying of the wood" (Bell. 1. ii. c. 17. sec.6). The tithes of all the produce of the fields were brought to the Levites; and out of these a tenth part was given to the priests, which is here called the tithe of the tithes. See the parallel passages. ↩
