⥃The Case against Israel

[1] Hear ye2 now what the Lord saith; Arise3, contend4 thou before5 the mountains, and let6 the hills hear thy voice. [2] Hear ye, O mountains, the Lord’s controversy, and ye strong foundations7 of the earth: for the Lord hath a controversy8 with his people, and he will plead with Israel. [3] O my9 people, what10 have I done unto thee? and wherein11 have I wearied thee? testify12 against me. [4] For I brought13 thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed14 thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses15, Aaron, and Miriam. [5] O my people, remember16 now what Balak17 king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam18 the son of Beor answered him from Shittim19 unto Gilgal; that ye may know20 the righteousness of the Lord.

[6] Wherewith21 shall I come before the Lord, [and] bow22 myself before the high23 God? shall I come before him with24 burnt offerings, with calves of a year old25? [7] Will the Lord be pleased26 with thousands of rams, [or] with ten thousands of rivers27 of oil? shall28 I give my firstborn [for] my transgression, the fruit of my body29 [for] the sin of my soul? [8] He hath shewed thee, O man30, what [is31] good; and what32 doth the Lord require of thee, but to do33 justly, and to love34 mercy, and to walk humbly35 with thy God?

⥃The Punishment of Israel

[9] The Lord’s36 voice crieth unto the city, and37 [the man of] wisdom shall see thy name38: hear39 ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

[10] [¶]Are40 there yet the treasures41 of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and42 the scant measure43 [that is] abominable? [11] Shall I count [them] pure44 with the wicked45 balances, and with the bag46 of deceitful weights? [12] For the rich47 men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken48 lies, and their tongue [is] deceitful in their mouth. [13] Therefore also will I make49 [thee] sick in50 smiting thee, in making [thee] desolate because of thy sins. [14] Thou shalt eat51, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down [shall be] in the midst of thee; and thou52 shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and [that] which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword. [15] Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.53

[16] [¶]For the statutes of Omri are kept54, and all the works55 of the house of Ahab, and ye walk56 in their counsels; that57 I should make thee a desolation58, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore59 ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
