Moab Seduces Israel[ 1 Corinthians 10:1–13 ]

[1] And Israel abode in Shittim2, and the people3 began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. [2] And they called4 the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed5 down to their gods. [3] And Israel joined6 himself unto Baal–peor: and the anger7 of the Lord was kindled against Israel. [4] And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads8 of the people, and hang9 them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce10 anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel. [5] And Moses said unto the judges11 of Israel, Slay ye12 every one his men that were joined unto Baal–peor.

The Zeal of Phinehas

[6] And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish13 woman in the sight of Moses14, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who [were] weeping15 [before] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. [7] And when Phinehas16, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw [it], he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin17 in his hand; [8] And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust18 both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague19 was stayed from the children of Israel. [9] And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.2021

[10] [¶]And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, [11] Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my22 wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake23 among them, that I24 consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. [12] Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:25 [13] And he shall have it, and his seed26 after him, [even] the covenant of an everlasting27 priesthood; because he was zealous28 for his God, and made an atonement29 for the children of Israel. [14] Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, [even] that was slain with the Midianitish woman, [was] Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince30 of a chief house31 among the Simeonites32. [15] And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain [was] Cozbi, the daughter of Zur33; he [was] head over a people, [and] of a chief house in Midian.

[16] And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, [17] Vex the Midianites, and smite them:3435 [18] For they vex you36 with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled37 you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which38 was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.

Dr. Kennicott remarks, that the Samaritan and Hebrew Texts must be united to make the sense of this verse complete: "And the Lord said unto Moses, Speak unto all the heads of the people; and let them slay the men that were joined to Baal–peor; and hang them up before the Lord, against the sun," etc. Deut 13:6-9, Deut 13:13, Deut 13:15, Deut 21:23; 2Sam 21:6, 2Sam 21:9; Esth 7:9-10

  20. St. Paul reckons only 23,000: Moses includes in the 24,000 he names, the 1,000 men who were slain in consequence of the judicial examination (Num 25:4), as well as the 23,000 who died of the plague; while St. Paul only refers to the latter.

  34. Balaam's counsel seems to have been first given to Balak, king of Moab; but probably the Midianitish women, especially of the higher ranks, as Cozbi was, were the principal tempters; and the nation of Midian seems to have come into the execrable measure more generally and heartily than that of Moab. They were therefore first selected to be made examples of, for a warning to the Moabites, who were spared at this time.
