‎חִתִּי‎ adjective and name, of a people Hittite(s) (Egyptian –-tá, –etá W Max MüllAsien u. Europa, 319 ff.; Assyrian –atti, SchrKG 192 ff. COT on Gen 10:19 DlPa, 269 ff.; Tel el-Amarna –atti, –atta BezTel el Amarn. Brit. Mus. 150) — masculine always with article ‎הַחִתִּי‎ Gen 23:10; Exod 3:8 +; feminine ‎חִתִּית‎ Ezek 16:3; Ezek 16:45 masculine plural ‎הַחִתִּים‎ Josh 1:4 + 3 t.; feminine plural ‎חִתִּיֹּת‎ 1Kgs 11:1

1. adjective , of seller of Machpelah to Abraham, ‎עֶפְרוֺן הַחִתִּי‎ Gen 23:10; Gen 49:29; Gen 49:30; Gen 50:13 ‎עֶפְרֹן בֶּןצֹֿחַר‎ ‎׳‎‎הַח‎ Gen 25:9 (all P); of fathers of Esau's wives ‎בְּאֵרִי‎ ‎׳‎‎הַח‎ Gen 26:34 ‎׳‎‎אֵילוֺן הַח‎ vGen 26:34; Gen 36:2 (all P); also of warriors of David, ‎׳‎‎אֲחִימֶלֶךְ הַח‎ 1Sam 26:6, and especially ‎׳‎‎אוּרִיָּה הַח‎ 2Sam 11:3; 2Sam 11:6; 2Sam 11:17; 2Sam 11:21; 2Sam 11:24; 2Sam 12:9; 2Sam 12:10; 2Sam 23:39; 1Kgs 15:5; 1Chr 11:41 feminine singular = substantive, only of (religious) ancestry of Jerusalem Ezek 16:3 thy father was the Amorite, and thy mother was a Hittite woman ‎חִתִּית‎, similarly vEzek 16:45 feminine plural = substantive of Solomon's foreign wives, ‎חִתִּיֹּת‎ 1Kgs 11:1 Hittite women (+ ‎מוֺאֲבִיּוֺת‎, ‎עַמּוֺנִיּוֺת‎, ‎אֲדֹמִיֹּת‎, ‎צֵדְנִיֹּת‎).

2. n. usually
a. collective ‎הַחִתִּי‎ the Hittites: in lists of Canaanitish peoples Gen 15:20 (JE), Exod 3:8; Exod 3:11 (both J), Exod 13:5; Exod 23:23; Exod 23:28; Exod 33:2; Exod 34:11; Num 13:29; Josh 3:10 (all J E), Deut 7:1; Deut 20:17; Josh 9:1; Josh 12:8; Josh 24:11 (all D); read also for ‎הַחִוִּי‎ Judg 3:3 (so We Mey BuUrg 350); in Josh 11:3 (D) strike out ‎הַחִתִּי‎ We Mey Bul.c., and read then ‎הַחִתִּי‎ for ‎הַחִוִּי‎ vb (so ᵐ5, not ᵐ5L); further 1Kgs 9:20 = 2Chr 8:7; Ezra 9:1; Neh 9:8.
b. plural ‎׃הַחִתִּים‎ ‎כֹּל אֶרֶץ הַחִתִּים‎ Josh 1:4 (D) nearly = land of Canaanites; ‎׳‎‎ארץ הַח‎ specifically of northern home of Hittites Judg 1:26 so also 2Sam 24:6 where read ‎אֶרֶץ הַחִתִּים קֵ֫דְשָׁה‎ (for ᵑ0 ‎תחתים חָדְשִׁי‎, see ‎חָדְשִׁי‎, ‎קֵדֶשׁ‎); ‎מַלְכֵי הַחִתִּים‎ 1Kgs 10:29 = 2Chr 1:17 (both + ‎מַלְכֵי אֲרָם‎), 2Kgs 7:6 (+ ‎מַלְכֵי מִצְרַיִם‎, both feared by ‎אֲרָם‎). Hence it appears that ‎הַחִתִּי (םׅ‎ had their proper seat in the north — where also they were encountered by Assyrians from time of Tiglath-Pileser I (see Schr Dl1. c.), and by Egyptians from time of Tutmes III (see W Max Müll.l.c.) — (compare also Judg 3:3; Josh 11:3 above), but that individual Hittites were known in Israel (compare, besides 1Sam 2:6; 2Sam 11:3 etc., 1Kgs 9:20 above); that the Hittites were regarded (by J E D) as one of the peoples of Canaan, and that the name even came to be used in more general sense for Canaanites. Only in P do they appear as having a definite settlement in the south, and are designated by ‎בְּנֵיחֵֿת‎ (see ‎חֵת‎), as well as by the adjective ‎הַחִתִּי‎.
