Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind

[1] And as [Jesus] passed by, he saw2 a man which was blind from [his] birth. [2] And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who3 did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? [3] Jesus answered, Neither4 hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but5 that the works of God should be made manifest in him. [4] I must6 work the works of him that sent me, while7 it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. [5] As long8 as I am9 in the world, I am the light of the world. [6] When he had thus spoken, he spat10 on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, [7] And said unto him, Go11, wash in the pool12 of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent13.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came14 seeing.

[8] The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not15 this he that sat16 and begged? [9] Some said, This is he: others [said], He is like him: [but] he said, I am [he]. [10] Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?17 [11] He answered and said, A man18 that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. [12] Then said they unto him, Where19 is he? He said, I know not.

The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

[13] They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.20 [14] And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.21 [15] Then again the Pharisees22 also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. [16] Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man23 is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there24 was a division among them. [17] They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is25 a prophet. [18] But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.26 [19] And they asked them, saying, Is this27 your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? [20] His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: [21] But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. [22] These [words] spake his parents, because28 they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should29 be put out of the synagogue. [23] Therefore said his parents, He is30 of age; ask him. [24] Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give31 God the praise: we know32 that this man is a sinner33. [25] He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner [or no], I know not: one34 thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. [26] Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? [27] He answered them, I have35 told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear [it] again? will ye also be his disciples? [28] Then they36 reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but37 we are Moses’ disciples. [29] We know38 that God spake unto Moses: [as for39] this [fellow], we know not40 from whence he is. [30] The man answered and said unto them, Why herein41 is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and [yet42] he hath opened mine eyes. [31] Now we know43 that God heareth not sinners: but if any44 man be a worshipper of God, and doeth45 his will, him46 he heareth. [32] Since47 the world48 began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. [33] If this man were49 not of God, he could do nothing. [34] They answered and said unto him, Thou wast50 altogether born in sins, and dost51 thou teach us? And they52 cast him out53.

Spiritual Blindness

[35] Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when54 he had found him, he said unto him, Dost55 thou believe on the Son56 of God? [36] He answered and said, Who57 is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? [37] And Jesus said unto him, Thou58 hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. [38] And he said, Lord59, I believe. And he worshipped him.

[39] And Jesus said, For60 judgment I am come into this world, that they61 which see not might see; and that they which see might be62 made blind. [40] And [some] of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are63 we blind also? [41] Jesus said unto them, If64 ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

  9. Our Lord here claims one of the titles given by the Jews to the Divine Being. So in Bammidbar Rabba, § 15, fol. 229.1, "The Israelites said to God, O Lord of the universe, thou commandest us to light lamps to thee, yet thou art the light of the world." It was also a title of the Messiah (see Isa 49:6; Isa 60:1); and in a remarkable passage of Yalkut Rubeni, fol. 6, it is said on Gen 1:4, "From this we learn that the holy and blessed God saw the light of the Messiah, and his works, before the world was created; and reserved it for the Messiah, and his generation, under the throne of his glory. Satan said to the holy and blessed God, For whom dost thou reserve that light which is under the throne of thy glory? God answered, For him who shall subdue thee, and overwhelm thee with confusion. Satan rejoined, Lord of the universe, shew that person to me. God said, Come, and see him. When he saw him, he was greatly agitated, and fell upon his face, saying, Truly this is the Messiah, who shall cast me and idolaters into hell."

  47. It is worthy of remark, that, from the foundation of the world, no person born blind had been restored to sight, even by surgical operation, till about the year 1728; when the celebrated Dr. Cheselden, by couching the eyes of a young man fourteen years of age, restored them to perfect vision. This was the effect of well-directed surgery; that performed by Christ was wholly a miracle, effected by the power of God. The simple means employed could have had no effect in this case, and were merely employed as symbols.
