⥃The LORD Will Not Forget His People 2
[1] O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth3; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself4. [2] Lift5 up thyself, thou6 judge of the earth: render7 a reward to the proud. [3] Lord8, how long shall the wicked9, how long shall the wicked triumph? [4] [How long] shall10 they utter [and] speak hard things? [and] all the workers of iniquity boast11 themselves? [5] They break12 in pieces thy people, O Lord, and afflict13 thine heritage. [6] They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.14 [7] Yet they say15, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard [it]. [8] Understand, ye brutish16 among the people: and [ye] fools17, when will ye be wise? [9] He that planted18 the ear, shall he not hear19? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? [10] He that chastiseth20 the heathen, shall not he correct21? he that teacheth man22 knowledge, [shall not he know]? [11] The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they [are] vanity.23 [12] Blessed24 [is] the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest25 him out of thy law; [13] That thou mayest26 give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit27 be digged for the wicked. [14] For28 the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake29 his inheritance. [15] But30 judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all31 the upright in heart shall follow it32. [16] Who will rise up33 for me against the evildoers? [or] who will stand up34 for me against the workers of iniquity? [17] Unless35 the Lord [had been] my help, my soul had almost36 dwelt37 in silence. [18] When I said, My foot38 slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord, held me up. [19] In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.39 [20] Shall the throne40 of iniquity have fellowship41 with thee, which frameth42 mischief by a law? [21] They gather43 themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn44 the innocent blood. [22] But45 the Lord is my defence; and my God [is] the rock46 of my refuge. [23] And he47 shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them48 off in their own wickedness; [yea], the Lord our God shall cut them off.

am 3416, bc 588 Dr. Delaney supposes that this Psalm was written by David on occasion of his war with the Ammonites, in consequence of the indignities shewn to his messengers; but it is more probable that it was written to bewail the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. ↩
