⥃Paul Greets the Corinthians [ Acts 18:1–11 † 1 Corinthians 1:1–3 ]

[1] Paul3, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy4 [our] brother, unto the church5 of God which is at Corinth, with all6 the saints which are in all Achaia7: [2] Grace [be] to you and peace from God our Father, and [from] the Lord Jesus Christ.8

⥃The God of All Comfort

[3] Blessed9 [be] God, even the Father of our10 Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies11, and the God12 of all comfort; [4] Who comforteth13 us in all our tribulation, that14 we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. [5] For as15 the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so16 our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. [6] And whether17 we be afflicted, [it is18] for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual19 in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, [it is] for your consolation and salvation. [7] And our20 hope of you [is] stedfast, knowing, that as ye21 are partakers of the sufferings, so [shall ye be] also of the consolation. [8] For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our22 trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch23 that we despaired even of life: [9] But we had the sentence24 of death in ourselves, that25 we should not trust in ourselves, but in God26 which raiseth the dead: [10] Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver [us];27 [11] Ye also helping28 together by prayer for us, that29 for the gift [bestowed] upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

⥃Paul’s Change of Plans

[12] For our rejoicing30 is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity31 and godly32 sincerity, not33 with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have34 had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward. [13] For we write none other things unto you, than35 what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end; [14] As also ye have acknowledged us in part36, that37 we are your38 rejoicing, even39 as ye also [are] ours in the40 day of the Lord Jesus. [15] And in41 this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that42 ye might have a second benefit43; [16] And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come44 again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judea. [17] When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness45? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according46 to the flesh, that with me there should be yea47 yea, and nay nay? [18] But [as48] God [is] true, our word49 toward you was not yea and nay. [19] For the Son50 of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, [even51] by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not52 yea and nay, but in him was yea. [20] For all53 the promises of God in him [are] yea, and in him Amen54, unto55 the glory of God by us. [21] Now he which stablisheth56 us with you in Christ, and hath anointed57 us, [is] God; [22] Who hath also sealed58 us, and given the earnest59 of the Spirit in our hearts. [23] Moreover I call60 God for a record upon my soul, that61 to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth. [24] Not for that62 we have dominion over your faith, but are63 helpers of your joy: for64 by faith ye stand.

  1. The most remarkable circumstance in this Epistle, observes Mr. Scott, is the confidence of the Apostle in the goodness of his cause, and in the power of God to bear him out in it. Opposed as he then was by a powerful and sagacious party, whose authority, reputation, and interest were deeply concerned, and who were ready to seize on every thing that could discredit him, it is wonderful to hear him so firmly insist upon his apostolical authority, and so unreservedly appeal to the miraculous power which he has exercised and conferred at Corinth. So far from shrinking from the contest, as afraid of some discovery being made, unfavourable to him and the common cause, he, with great modesty and meekness indeed, but with equal boldness and decision, expressly declares that his opposers and despisers were the ministers of Satan, and menaces them with miraculous judgments, when as many of their deluded hearers had been brought to repentance and re-established in the faith, as proper means could in a reasonable time effect. It is inconceivable that a stronger internal testimony, not only of integrity, but of divine inspiration, can exist. Had there been anything of imposture among the Christians, it was next to impossible but such a conduct must have occasioned a disclosure of it. Of the effects produced by this latter epistle we have no circumstantial account; for the journey which St. Paul took to Corinth, after he had written it, is mentioned by St. Luke only in a few words (Acts 20:2, Acts 20:3). We know, however, that St. Paul was there after he had written this Epistle; that the contributions for the poor brethren at Jerusalem were brought to him from different parts to that city (Rom 15:26); and that, after remaining there several months, he sent salutations from some of the principal members of that church, by whom he must have been greatly respected, to the church of Rome (Rom 16:22, Rom 16:23). From this time we hear no more of the false teacher and his party; and when Clement of Rome wrote his epistle to the Corinthians, St. Paul was considered by them as a divine apostle, to whose authority he might appeal without fear of contradiction. The false teacher, therefore, must either have been silenced by St. Paul, by virtue of his apostolical powers, and by an act of severity which he had threatened (2Cor 13:2, 2Cor 13:3); or this adversary of the apostle had, at that time, voluntarily quitted the place. Whichever was the cause, the effect produced must operate as a confirmation of our faith, and as a proof of St. Paul’s divine mission. ↩
