⥃I Waited Patiently for the LORD 2  [ Psalms 70:1–5 † Hebrews 10:1–18 ]

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

[1] I waited3 patiently for the Lord; and he inclined4 unto me, and heard my cry. [2] He brought5 me up also out of an horrible pit6, out of the miry7 clay, and set8 my feet upon a rock, [and] established9 my goings. [3] And he10 hath put a new song in my mouth, [even] praise11 unto our God: many12 shall see [it], and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. [4] Blessed13 [is] that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth14 not the proud, nor such as turn15 aside to lies. [5] Many16, O Lord my God, [are] thy wonderful works [which] thou hast done, and thy thoughts17 [which are] to us-ward: they cannot18 be reckoned up in order unto thee: [if] I would declare and speak [of them], they are more than can be numbered. [6] Sacrifice19 and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears20 hast thou opened21: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. [7] Then said I, Lo22, I come: in the23 volume of the book [it is] written of me, [8] I delight24 to do thy will, O my God: yea25, thy law [is] within my heart26. [9] I have preached27 righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not28 refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest29. [10] I have not hid30 thy righteousness31 within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness32 and thy salvation33: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness34 and thy truth from the great congregation. [11] Withhold35 not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let thy36 lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. [12] For innumerable37 evils have compassed me about: mine38 iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are39 more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart40 faileth41 me. [13] Be42 pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make43 haste to help me. [14] Let them be ashamed44 and confounded together that45 seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven46 backward and put to shame that wish me evil. [15] Let them be desolate47 for a reward of their shame that say48 unto me, Aha, aha. [16] Let all49 those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love50 thy salvation say51 continually, The Lord be magnified. [17] But I [am] poor52 and needy; [yet] the Lord53 thinketh upon me: thou [art] my help54 and my deliverer; make55 no tarrying, O my God.

  1. am 2970, bc 1034 This psalm is supposed to have been composed by David about the same time, and on the same occasion, as the two preceding; with this difference, that here he magnifies God for have obtained the mercy which he sought there. It also contains a remarkable prophecy of the incarnation and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. ↩
