⥃Hurry, O LORD, to Help Me! [ Psalms 40:1–17 † Psalms 141:1–10 ]

To the chief Musician, [A Psalm] of David, to bring2 to remembrance.

[1] [Make haste], O God3, to deliver me; make haste to help me4, O Lord. [2] Let5 them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul6: let them be turned7 backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt. [3] Let them be turned back8 for a reward of their shame that say, Aha9, aha. [4] Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.10 [5] But I [am11] poor and needy: make12 haste unto me, O God: thou [art] my help and my deliverer; O Lord13, make no tarrying.

  1. Ps 70:1, David solicits God to the speedy destruction of the wicked, and preservation of the godly. This Psalm is almost word for word the same as the five Ps 40:13 of Psalm 40; and it is written as a part of the succeeding Psalm in about 27 manuscripts. Both Psalms evidently appear to have been written by David during the rebellion of Absalom, and probably at the crisis when he heard of the sanguinary counsel which Ahithophel had given respecting him; or, as some suppose, when beyond Jordan. 2Sam. 17:1-21 ↩
