⥃The Council at Jerusalem [ Acts 15:5–21 ]
[1] Then fourteen2 years after I went3 up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas4, and took Titus5 with [me] also. [2] And I went up by6 revelation, and communicated7 unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately8 to them which9 were of reputation, lest by any means I should10 run, or had run, in vain. [3] But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:11 [4] And that because12 of false brethren unawares13 brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty14 which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring15 us into bondage: [5] To whom we16 gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that17 the truth of the gospel might continue with you. [6] But of these who18 seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh19 no matter to me: God20 accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed [to be somewhat] in21 conference added nothing to me: [7] But contrariwise, when22 they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision23 was committed unto me, as [the gospel] of the circumcision [was] unto Peter; [8] (For he24 that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same25 was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) [9] And when James26, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars27, perceived the grace28 that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship29; that we [should30 go] unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. [10] Only [they would] that31 we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.
⥃Paul Confronts Cephas
[11] But when Peter was come to Antioch32, I withstood33 him to the face, because34 he was to be blamed. [12] For before that certain35 came from James, he did36 eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew37 and separated himself, fearing38 them which were of the circumcision. [13] And the other39 Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried40 away with their dissimulation. [14] But when I saw that they walked41 not uprightly according to the truth42 of the gospel, I said43 unto Peter before [them] all, If thou44, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why45 compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? [15] We [who are] Jews46 by nature, and not sinners47 of the Gentiles, [16] Knowing that48 a man is not justified by the works of the law, but49 by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have50 believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for51 by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. [17] But if, while52 we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found53 sinners, [is54] therefore Christ the minister of sin? God55 forbid. [18] For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.56 [19] For I through57 the law am dead58 to the law, that59 I might live unto God. [20] I am crucified60 with Christ: nevertheless61 I live; yet not I, but62 Christ liveth in me: and the life63 which I now64 live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son65 of God, who66 loved me, and gave himself for me. [21] I do not67 frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness68 [come] by the law, then Christ69 is dead in vain.
