Paul and the False Apostles

[1] Would2 to God ye could bear with me a3 little in4 [my] folly: and indeed bear with me5. [2] For I am jealous6 over you with godly jealousy: for I have7 espoused you to one husband, that I may8 present [you as] a chaste9 virgin to Christ. [3] But I fear10, lest by any means, as11 the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so12 your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity13 that is in Christ. [4] For if he that cometh preacheth14 another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or [if] ye receive15 another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel16, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with [him17]. [5] For I suppose I was not18 a whit behind the very chiefest apostles. [6] But though [I be] rude19 in speech, yet not20 in knowledge; but we21 have been thoroughly made manifest among you in all things. [7] Have I committed an offence in22 abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely? [8] I robbed other churches, taking wages [of them], to do you service.23 [9] And when I was present with you, and wanted24, I was25 chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren26 which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all [things] I have kept myself from being burdensome27 unto you, and [so] will I keep [myself].28 [10] As the truth29 of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting30 in the regions31 of Achaia. [11] Wherefore? because32 I love you not? God33 knoweth. [12] But what34 I do, that I will do, that I may35 cut off occasion from them36 which desire occasion; that wherein they glory37, they may be found even as we. [13] For such [are] false38 apostles, deceitful39 workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. [14] And no marvel; for40 Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. [15] Therefore [it is] no41 great thing if his42 ministers also be transformed as the ministers43 of righteousness; whose44 end shall be according to their works.

Paul’s Suffering and Service[ Colossians 1:24–29 ]

[16] I say45 again, Let46 no man think me a fool; if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me47, that I may boast myself a little. [17] That which I speak, I speak [it48] not after the Lord, but as it were foolishly49, in this confidence of boasting. [18] Seeing that many50 glory after the flesh, I will51 glory also. [19] For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing52 ye [yourselves] are wise. [20] For ye suffer, if a man bring53 you into bondage, if a man devour [you], if a man take54 [of you], if a man exalt himself, if a man smite55 you on the face. [21] I speak as concerning reproach, as though56 we had been weak. Howbeit whereinsoever57 any is bold, (I speak58 foolishly,) I am bold also. [22] Are they Hebrews59? so [am] I. Are they Israelites? so [am] I. Are they the seed60 of Abraham? so [am] I. [23] Are they ministers61 of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I [am62] more; in labours63 more abundant, in stripes64 above measure, in prisons65 more frequent, in deaths66 oft. [24] Of the Jews five times received I forty67 [stripes] save one. [25] Thrice was I beaten68 with rods, once69 was I stoned, thrice70 I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; [26] [In] journeyings71 often, [in] perils of waters, [in] perils of robbers, [in] perils by [mine72 own] countrymen, [in] perils by the73 heathen, [in] perils in the city74, [in] perils in the wilderness, [in] perils in the sea, [in] perils among false brethren; [27] In weariness75 and painfulness, in watchings76 often, in hunger77 and thirst, in fastings78 often, in cold and nakedness79. [28] Beside those80 things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care81 of all the churches. [29] Who is weak82, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn83 not? [30] If I must84 needs glory, I will85 glory of the things which concern mine infirmities. [31] The God86 and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which87 is blessed for evermore, knoweth88 that I lie not. [32] In Damascus89 the governor under Aretas90 the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me: [33] And through a window in a basket was I let91 down by the wall, and escaped his hands.

  1. 2Cor 11:1, Out of his jealousy over the Corinthians, who seemed to make more account of the false apostles than of him, he enters into a forced commendation of himself, 2Cor 11:5, of his equality with the chief apostles, 2Cor 11:7, of his preaching the gospel to them freely, and without any charge to them; 2Cor 11:13, shewing that he was not inferior to those deceitful workers in any legal prerogative; 2Cor 11:23, and in the service of Christ, and in all kinds of sufferings for his ministry, far superior.

  90. This Aretas was an Arabian king, and the father-in-law of Herod Antipas, upon whom he made war in consequence of his having divorced his daughter. Herod applied to Tiberius for help, who sent Vitellius to reduce Aretas, and to bring him alive or dead to Rome. By some means or other Vitellius delayed his operations, and in the mean time Tiberius died; and it is probable that Aretas, who was thus snatched from ruin, availed himself of the favourable state of things, and seized on Damascus, which had belonged to his ancestors.
