⥃A Reproof of Ephraim, Judah, and Jacob
[1] Ephraim feedeth2 on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily3 increaseth lies and desolation; and they4 do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt. [2] The Lord hath also a controversy5 with Judah, and will6 punish7 Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings8 will he recompense him.
[3] [¶]He took9 his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had10 power with God: [4] Yea, he had power over the angel11, and prevailed: he wept, and made12 supplication unto him: he found13 him [in] Beth–el, and there he spake14 with us; [5] Even15 the Lord God of hosts; the Lord [is16] his memorial. [6] Therefore turn17 thou to thy God: keep18 mercy and judgment, and wait19 on thy God continually.
[7] [He is] a merchant20, the balances21 of deceit [are] in his hand: he loveth22 to oppress23. [8] And Ephraim said, Yet24 I am become rich, I have25 found me out substance: [in] all26 my labours they27 shall find none iniquity in me that28 [were] sin. [9] And I [that29 am] the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt will yet30 make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in31 the days of the solemn feast. [10] I have also32 spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied33 visions, and used34 similitudes, by the ministry35 of the prophets. [11] [Is there] iniquity36 [in] Gilead? surely37 they are vanity: they sacrifice38 bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars39 [are] as heaps in the furrows of the fields. [12] And Jacob40 fled into the country of Syria, and Israel41 served42 for a wife, and for a wife he kept [sheep]. [13] And by a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.43 [14] Ephraim provoked44 [him] to anger most bitterly45: therefore46 shall he leave his blood47 upon him, and his48 reproach shall his Lord return unto him.
