Jonah Flees from the LORD[ Nahum 1:1–15 ]

[1] Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah2 the son of Amittai, saying, [2] Arise, go to Nineveh3, that great city, and cry4 against it; for5 their wickedness is come up before me. [3] But Jonah rose up to flee6 unto Tarshish from7 the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa8; and he found a ship going to Tarshish9: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

The Great Storm[ Acts 27:13–26 ]

[4] But the Lord10 sent out11 a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like12 to be broken. [5] Then the mariners were afraid, and cried13 every man unto his god, and cast14 forth the wares that [were] in the ship into the sea, to lighten [it] of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides15 of the ship; and he lay, and was16 fast asleep. [6] So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What17 meanest thou, O sleeper? arise18, call upon thy God, if19 so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. [7] And they said every20 one to his fellow, Come, and let21 us cast lots, that we may know for22 whose cause this evil [is] upon us. So they cast lots, and the23 lot fell upon Jonah. [8] Then said they unto him, Tell24 us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil [is] upon us; What [is] thine25 occupation? and whence comest thou? what [is] thy country? and of what people [art] thou? [9] And he said unto them, I [am26] an Hebrew; and I27 fear the Lord28, the God29 of heaven, which30 hath made the sea and the dry [land]. [10] Then were31 the men exceedingly afraid32, and said unto him, Why33 hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled34 from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

Jonah Cast into the Sea

[11] Then said they unto him, What35 shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us36? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. [12] And he said unto them, Take37 me up, and cast me for38th into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest [is] upon you. [13] Nevertheless the39 men rowed40 hard to bring [it] to the land; but41 they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. [14] Wherefore they42 cried unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let43 us not perish for44 this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O Lord, hast done as it pleased thee. [15] So they45 took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the46 sea ceased47 from her raging. [16] Then the men feared48 the Lord exceedingly, and offered49 a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made50 vows.

[17] [¶]Now the Lord51 had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in52 the belly53 of the fish three days and three nights.

  9. As Jonah embarked at Joppa, a seaport on the Mediterranean, it was probably either Tarsus in Cilicia, or rather Tartessus in Spain, to which he intended to flee. When we reflect how such a message would be received in the streets of London at this day, we shall not wonder at the prophet's reluctance to announce the destruction of the proud and idolatrous Nineveh.
