⥃My Heart Is Stirred by a Noble Theme [ 1 Kings 3:1–15 † 2 Chronicles 1:1–13 † Psalms 72:1–20 ]
To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim2, for the sons of Korah, Maschil3, A Song4 of loves.
[1] My heart is inditing5 a good6 matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching7 the king: my tongue8 [is] the pen of a ready writer. [2] Thou art fairer9 than the children of men: grace10 is poured into thy lips: therefore God11 hath blessed thee for ever. [3] Gird12 thy sword upon [thy] thigh, O [most13] mighty, with thy glory14 and thy majesty. [4] And in thy majesty ride15 prosperously16 because17 of truth and meekness18 [and] right19eousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. [5] Thine20 arrows [are] sharp21 in the heart of the king’s enemies; [whereby] the people22 fall under thee. [6] Thy throne23, O God24, [is] for ever and ever: the sceptre25 of thy kingdom [is] a right sceptre. [7] Thou26 lovest righteousness, and hatest27 wickedness: therefore God28, thy God29, hath30 anointed thee with the oil31 of gladness above32 thy fellows. [8] All33 thy garments [smell] of myrrh, and aloes, [and] cassia34, out of the ivory35 palaces, whereby36 they have made thee glad. [9] Kings’37 daughters [were] among thy honourable women: upon38 thy right hand did stand the queen39 in gold40 of Ophir. [10] Hearken41, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget42 also thine own people, and thy father’s house; [11] So shall43 the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he [is] thy Lord44; and worship45 thou him. [12] And the46 daughter of Tyre [shall be there] with47 a gift; [even] the rich48 among the people shall intreat thy favour49. [13] The king’s50 daughter [is] all glorious51 within: her clothing52 [is] of wrought gold. [14] She53 shall be brought unto the king in raiment54 of needlework: the virgins55 her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee. [15] With56 gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall57 enter into the king’s palace. [16] Instead58 of thy fathers shall be thy children59, whom thou mayest make princes60 in all the earth. [17] I will61 make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore62 shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.

Ps 45:1, The majesty and grace of Christ’s kingdom; Ps 45:10, The duty of the church, and the benefits thereof. Or, rather, “To the chief musician upon the hexachords, a didactic ode for the sons of Korah, and a song of loves.” Shoshannim most probably denotes hexachords, or six-stringed instruments, from shesh , “six:” hence the Persian shasta , a six-stringed lute. This Psalm is supposed by some to be an epithalamium, or nuptial song, on the marriage of Solomon with Pharaoh’s daughter; but with what propriety could Solomon be described as fairer than the children of men, a mighty warrior, a victorious conqueror, and a prince whose throne is for ever and ever? A greater than Solomon is here; and the person described is no other than the Messiah, as is acknowledged by many Jewish writers. The Targum on Ps 45:3 says, “Thy beauty, malka meshecha , O King Messiah, is greater than the children of men;” and the Apostle expressly quotes it as such Heb 1:8, Heb 1:9. It was probably written by David after Nathan’s prophetic address 1Chr 17:27. ↩
