⥃The Queen of Sheba [ 1 Kings 10:1–13 ]

[1] And when2 the queen of Sheba3 heard of the fame4 of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with hard questions5 at Jerusalem, with a very great company, and camels6 that bare spices7, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed8 with him of all that was in her heart. [2] And Solomon told her all9 her questions: and there10 was nothing hid from Solomon which he told her not. [3] And when the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom11 of Solomon, and the house12 that he had built, [4] And the meat13 of his table, and the sitting14 of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel; his cupbearers15 also, and their apparel; and his ascent16 by which he went up into the house of the Lord; there was17 no more spirit in her. [5] And she said to the king, [It was] a true report18 which I heard in mine own land of thine acts19, and of thy wisdom: [6] Howbeit I believed20 not their words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen [it]: and, behold, the one half21 of the greatness of thy wisdom was not told me: [for] thou exceedest22 the fame that I heard. [7] Happy [are] thy men, and happy [are] these thy servants, which stand continually before thee, and hear thy wisdom.23 [8] Blessed24 be the Lord thy God, which delighted25 in thee to set thee on his throne, [to be] king for the Lord thy God: because thy God26 loved Israel, to establish them for ever, therefore made he thee king over them, to do judgment27 and justice.28 [9] And she gave29 the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices30 great abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such spice as the queen of Sheba31 gave king Solomon. [10] And the servants also of Huram, and the servants of Solomon, which brought gold32 from Ophir, brought algum trees33 and precious stones. [11] And the king made [of] the algum trees terraces34 to the house of the Lord, and to the king’s palace, and harps35 and psalteries for singers: and there were none such seen before in the land of Judah. [12] And king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire36, whatsoever she asked, beside [that] which she had brought unto the king. So she turned, and went away to her own land, she and her servants.

⥃Solomon’s Wealth and Splendor [ 1 Kings 10:14–29 ]

[13] Now the weight37 of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred and threescore and six talents of gold; [14] Beside [that which] chapmen and merchants brought. And all the kings of Arabia and governors38 of the country brought gold and silver to Solomon.

[15] [¶]And king Solomon made two39 hundred targets [of] beaten gold: six hundred [shekels] of beaten gold went to one target. [16] And three hundred shields [made he of] beaten gold: three hundred [shekels] of gold went to one shield. And the king put them in the house40 of the forest of Lebanon. [17] Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with pure gold.41 [18] And [there were] six steps to the throne, with a footstool of gold, [which were] fastened to the throne, and stays42 on each side of the sitting place, and two lions43 standing by the stays: [19] And twelve lions44 stood there on the one side and on the other upon the six steps. There was not the like made in any kingdom.

[20] [¶]And all the drinking45 vessels of king Solomon [were of] gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon [were of] pure46 gold: none [were of] silver47; it was48 [not] any thing accounted of in the days of Solomon. [21] For the king’s ships went to Tarshish49 with the servants of Huram: every three years once came the ships of Tarshish bringing gold, and silver, ivory50, and apes, and peacocks51.52 [22] And king Solomon passed all the kings53 of the earth in riches and wisdom.

[23] [¶]And all the kings of the earth sought54 the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, that God55 had put in his heart. [24] And they brought every man56 his present, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and raiment, harness, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year.

[25] [¶]And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen; whom he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.57

[26] [¶]And he reigned over58 all the kings from the river59 even unto the land of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt. [27] And the king60 made61 silver in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar trees made he as the sycomore62 trees that [are] in the low plains in abundance. [28] And they brought63 unto Solomon horses out of Egypt, and out of all lands.

⥃The Death of Solomon [ 1 Kings 11:41–43 ]

[29] [¶]Now the rest64 of the acts of Solomon, first and last, [are] they not written in the book65 of Nathan66 the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah67 the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo68 the seer against Jeroboam the son of Nebat? [30] And Solomon69 reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. [31] And Solomon slept70 with his fathers, and he was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead. 71

  31. This queen is called Balkis by the Arabians, who say she came from the city of Sheba, also called Mareb, in Yemen or Arabia Felix; but the Ethiopians call her Maqueda, claim her as their sovereign, and say that her posterity reigned there for a long time. Mr. Bruce has given us the history of her and her descendants from Abyssinian records; and Josephus says that Sheba was the ancient name of the city of Meroe (south of Egypt, and sometimes comprehended in Ethiopia), and that this princess came from thence. Those who think the princess came from Arabia, rely chiefly on the fact that gold, silver, spices, and precious stones, which were the presents she made to Solomon, are the natural products of that country; and that it may well be placed at the uttermost part of the earth, as it borders on the southern ocean, and formerly they knew no land beyond it. ↩

  49. Bochart thinks this Tarshish was probably the promontory Cory, on the north of the island of Ceylon, which, according to him, was the land of Ophir. That it was name of a place in the East Indies, seems probable from the articles brought thence, and also from the ships sent thither being built at Ezion–geber, on the Red Sea; though Michaelis supposes that the fleet coasted along the shore of Africa, doubling the Cape of Good Hope, and came to Tartessus, in Spain, and thence back again the same way; that this accounts for their three years' voyage out and home; and that Spain and the coasts of Africa furnish all the commodities which they brought back. ↩

  63. "Moses," says Bp. Warburton, "had expressly prohibited the multiplying of horses (Deut 17:16); by which the future king was forbidden to establish a body of calvary, because this could not be effected without sending into Egypt, with which people God had forbidden any communication, as this would be dangerous to religion.
