⥃Longing for Her Beloved

[1] O that thou2 [wert] as my brother, that sucked3 the breasts of my mother! [when] I should find thee4 without, I would5 kiss thee; yea6, I should not be despised7. [2] I would lead thee, [and] bring8 thee into my mother’s house, [who9] would instruct me: I would cause10 thee to drink of spiced11 wine of the juice of my pomegranate. [3] His left hand [should be] under my head, and his right hand should embrace me.12 [4] I charge13 you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake14 [my] love, until he please.

[5] Who [is] this15 that cometh up from the16 wilderness, leaning17 upon her beloved? I raised18 thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she19 brought thee forth [that] bare thee.

⥃The Bride

[6] [¶]Set me as a seal20 upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love21 [is] strong as death; jealousy22 [is] cruel23 as the grave: the coals24 thereof [are] coals of fire, [which hath] a most vehement flame. [7] Many waters25 cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man26 would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

[8] We have a little27 sister, and she hath28 no breasts: what29 shall we do for our sister in the day30 when she shall be spoken for? [9] If she [be] a wall31, we will32 build upon her a palace of silver: and if she [be] a door33, we will inclose her with boards of cedar.

⥃The Bride

[10] I [am] a wall34, and my35 breasts like towers: then36 was I in his eyes as one that found favour37. [11] Solomon38 had a39 vineyard at Baal–hamon; he let40 out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand41 [pieces] of silver. [12] My vineyard42, which [is] mine, [is] before me: thou43, O Solomon, [must have] a thousand, and those44 that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.

[13] Thou that dwellest45 in the gardens, the companions46 hearken to thy voice: cause47 me to hear [it].

⥃The Bride

[14] [¶]Make haste48, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices.
