Azariah Reigns in Judah[ 2 Chronicles 26:3–23 ]

[1] In the2 twenty and seventh3 year of Jeroboam king of Israel began Azariah4 son of Amaziah king of Judah to reign.5 [2] Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name [was] Jecholiah of Jerusalem. [3] And he did [that which was] right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah had done;6 [4] Save that the high places7 were not removed: the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places.

[5] [¶]And the Lord8 smote the king, so that9 he was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt10 in a several house. And Jotham11 the king’s son [was] over the house, judging12 the people of the land.13 [6] And the rest of the acts of Azariah14, and all that he did, [are] they not written15 in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?16171819 [7] So Azariah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.20

Zechariah Reigns in Israel

[8] In the thirty21 and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah did Zachariah22 the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel in Samaria six months.23 [9] And he did [that which was] evil in the sight of the Lord, as his24 fathers had done: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. [10] And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and smote him25 before the people, and slew him26, and reigned in his stead.27 [11] And the rest of the acts of Zachariah, behold, they [are] written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.28 [12] This [was] the word29 of the Lord which he spake unto Jehu, saying, Thy sons30 shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth [generation]. And so31 it came to pass.32

Shallum Reigns in Israel

[13] [¶]Shallum the son of Jabesh began to reign in the nine and thirtieth year of Uzziah33 king of Judah; and he reigned a full month34 in Samaria.35 [14] For Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah36, and came to Samaria, and smote37 Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria, and slew him, and reigned in his stead. [15] And the rest of the acts of Shallum, and his conspiracy which he made, behold, they [are] written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.38

[16] [¶]Then Menahem smote Tiphsah39, and all that [were] therein, and the coasts thereof from Tirzah: because they opened not [to him], therefore he smote [it]; [and] all the women40 therein that were with child he ripped up.

Menahem Reigns in Israel

[17] In the nine41 and thirtieth year of Azariah king of Judah began Menahem the son of Gadi to reign over Israel, [and reigned] ten years in Samaria.42 [18] And he did [that which was] evil in the sight of the Lord: he departed not all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.43 [19] [And] Pul44 the king of Assyria came against the land: and Menahem45 gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, that his hand might be with him to confirm46 the kingdom in his hand.47 [20] And Menahem48 exacted49 the money of Israel, [even] of all the mighty50 men of wealth, of each man51 fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back, and stayed not52 there in the land.

[21] [¶]And the rest of the acts of Menahem, and all that he did, [are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?53 [22] And Menahem slept with his fathers; and Pekahiah his son reigned in his stead.

Pekahiah Reigns in Israel

[23] [¶]In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekahiah the son of Menahem began to reign over Israel in Samaria, [and reigned] two years54.55 [24] And he did [that which was] evil in the sight of the Lord: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.56 [25] But Pekah57 the son of Remaliah, a captain58 of his, conspired59 against him, and smote him in Samaria, in the palace of the king’s house, with Argob60 and Arieh, and with him fifty men of the Gileadites: and he killed him, and reigned in his room.61 [26] And the rest of the acts of Pekahiah, and all that he did, behold, they [are] written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.62

Pekah Reigns in Israel

[27] [¶]In the two63 and fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekah64 the son of Remaliah began to reign over Israel in Samaria, [and reigned] twenty years.65 [28] And he did [that which was] evil66 in the sight of the Lord: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. [29] In the days of Pekah king of Israel came Tiglath–pileser67 king of Assyria, and took Ijon68, and Abel–beth–maachah, and Janoah69, and Kedesh70, and Hazor71, and Gilead72, and Galilee73, all the land of Naphtali, and carried them74 captive to Assyria. [30] And Hoshea the son of Elah made75 a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah, and smote76 him, and slew him, and reigned77 in his stead, in the twentieth78 year of Jotham the son of Uzziah.79 [31] And the rest of the acts of Pekah, and all that he did, behold, they [are] written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

Jotham Reigns in Judah[ 2 Chronicles 27:1–9 ]

[32] In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah king of Israel began Jotham8081 the son of Uzziah king of Judah to reign.82 [33] Five and twenty years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name [was] Jerusha83, the daughter of Zadok.84 [34] And he did [that which was] right in the sight of the Lord: he did according85 to all that his father Uzziah had done.

[35] [¶]Howbeit86 the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burned incense still in the high places. He built the higher gate87 of the house of the Lord.

[36] [¶]Now the rest88 of the acts of Jotham, and all that he did, [are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? [37] In those days89 the Lord began90 to send91 against Judah Rezin92 the king of Syria, and Pekah93 the son of Remaliah.94 [38] And Jotham95 slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Ahaz96 his son reigned in his stead.

  14. Dr. Kennicott complains loudly here of "the corruption in the name of this king of Judah, who is expressed by four different names in this chapter: Ozriah, Oziah, Ozrihu, and Ozihu. Our oldest Hebrew manuscript relieves us here, by reading truly, in 2Kgs 15:1, 2Kgs 15:6-7, Uzziah, where the printed text is differently corrupted. This reading is called true:

  15. 2Kgs 14:18; 2Chr 26:5-15

    1. Because it is supported by the Syriac and Arabic versions in these three verses.

    1. Because the printed text itself has it so in 2Kgs 15:32 and 2Kgs 15:34 of this very chapter.

    1. Because it is so expressed in the parallel place in Chronicles.

    1. Because it is not Αζαριας, Azarias, but Οζιας, Ozias (Uzziah) in St. Matthew's genealogy.

  40. Prideaux supposes that this Pul was the father of the famous Sardanapalus, who was called Sardan with his father's name Pul annexed, as was frequent in those times, making Sardanpul: thus Merodach, king of Babylon, was Merodach-Baladan, because he was the son Baladan. This Pul began to reign according to Usher, am 3237, the fifth year of Menahem; and he is supposed to be the same that reigned in Nineveh, when Jonah preached in that city. 1Chr 5:25-26; Isa 9:1
