Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom[ 1 Kings 3:1–15 Psalms 45:1–17 Psalms 72:1–20 ]

[1] And Solomon the son of David was strengthened2 in his kingdom, and the Lord3 his God [was] with him, and magnified4 him exceedingly. [2] Then Solomon5 spake unto all Israel, to the captains6 of thousands and of hundreds, and to the judges, and to every governor in all Israel, the chief7 of the fathers. [3] So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that [was] at Gibeon8; for there was the tabernacle9 of the congregation of God, which Moses the servant10 of the Lord had made in the wilderness. [4] But the ark11 of God had David brought up from Kirjath–jearim to [the place which] David had prepared for it: for he had pitched12 a tent for it at Jerusalem. [5] Moreover the brasen13 altar, that Bezaleel14 the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put15 before the tabernacle of the Lord: and Solomon and the congregation sought unto it16. [6] And Solomon went up thither to the brasen altar before the Lord, which [was] at the tabernacle of the congregation, and offered a thousand17 burnt offerings upon it.

[7] [¶]In that night18 did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask19 what I shall give thee. [8] And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed20 great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign21 in his stead. [9] Now, O Lord God, let thy promise22 unto David my father be established: for thou hast23 made me king over a people like the dust24 of the earth in multitude. [10] Give me25 now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out26 and come in before this people: for who can27 judge this thy people, [that is so] great? [11] And God said to Solomon, Because28 this was29 in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest30 judge my people, over whom I have made thee king: [12] Wisdom and knowledge [is] granted unto thee; and I will give31 thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none32 of the kings have had that [have been] before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.

[13] Then Solomon came [from his journey] to the high place that [was] at Gibeon33 to Jerusalem, from before the tabernacle of the congregation, and reigned34 over Israel.

Solomon’s Riches[ 1 Kings 10:26–29 ]

[14] And Solomon35 gathered chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, which he placed in the chariot cities36, and with the king at Jerusalem. [15] And the king37 made38 silver and gold at Jerusalem [as plenteous] as stones, and cedar trees made he as the sycomore trees39 that [are] in the vale for abundance. [16] And Solomon40 had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn41: the king’s merchants received the linen yarn at a price. [17] And they fetched up, and brought forth out of Egypt a chariot for six hundred [shekels] of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so brought they out [horses] for all the kings42 of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, by their means43.

  5. This seems to have taken place a short time after David's decease, and, according to some, in the second year of Solomon's reign; when being established in his kingdom, he convened his chief men, and spake to them concerning the solemn sacrifice which he purposed to offer to God.

  28. This does not occur in Kings, and it implies that the request of Solomon, as arising from a spiritual judgment and heart, was peculiarly acceptable to that God who searches, regards, and demands the heart. God promised Solomon all the things which he had not asked, except the life of his enemies; for he was to be a peaceable king, a type of the Prince of peace.

  41. The word ξχεΰ ( ‎מִקְוֶה‎ ), or ξχεδ ( ‎מִקְוֶה‎ ), mikweh, is regarded by the ancient translators as a proper name. The LXX have εκ Θεκουε, "from Tekoa," the Vulgate, de Coa, "from Koa," which is adopted by Dr. Geddes; the Syriac, "from the city Aphelia;" and the Arabic, "ex urbe Australium." Bochart thinks it signifies a tribute; others suppose that it signifies a string or drove of horses, or as Jarchi says, what the Germans call Stutte, a stud; but Houbigant supposes it to be a corruption for mercavah, "chariots." Our English translation, however, which regards it as synonymous with tikwah, seems by far the best. According to Norden, linen yarn is still one of the principal articles of commerce in Egypt, and is exported in very large quantities, together with unmanufactured flax and spun cotton; and Sanutus, 400 years ago, remarked that though Christian countries abounded in flax, yet the goodness of the Egyptian was such, that it was dispersed even to the west.
