Laws for Burnt Offerings[ Leviticus 6:8–13 ]

[1] And the Lord called3 unto Moses, and spake unto him out of4 the tabernacle of the congregation, saying, [2] Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any5 man of you bring an offering6 unto the Lord, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, [even] of the herd, and of the flock. [3] If his offering [be] a burnt7 sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male8 without blemish: he shall offer it of his own9 voluntary will at the10 door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord. [4] And he shall put11 his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted12 for him to make atonement13 for him. [5] And he shall kill14 the bullock before the Lord: and the priests15, Aaron’s sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle16 the blood round about upon the altar that [is by] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. [6] And he shall flay the burnt offering, and cut it into his pieces.17 [7] And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire18 upon the altar, and lay19 the wood in order upon the fire: [8] And the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and the fat, in order upon the wood that [is] on the fire which [is] upon the altar:20 [9] But his inwards21 and his legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all22 on the altar, [to be] a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet23 savour unto the Lord.

[10] And if his offering [be] of the flocks24, [namely], of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice25; he shall bring it a male26 without blemish. [11] And he shall27 kill it on the side of the altar northward28 before the Lord: and the29 priests, Aaron’s sons, shall sprinkle his blood round about upon the altar. [12] And he shall cut it into his pieces, with his head and his fat: and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that [is] on the fire which [is] upon the altar:30 [13] But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water: and the priest shall bring [it] all, and burn [it] upon the altar: it [is] a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord.31

[14] [¶]And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the Lord [be] of fowls32, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves, or of young pigeons. [15] And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and wring off his head33, and burn [it] on the altar; and the blood thereof shall be wrung out at the side of the altar: [16] And he shall pluck away his crop with his feathers34, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, by the place35 of the ashes: [17] And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, [but] shall not36 divide [it] asunder: and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, upon the wood that [is] upon the fire: it [is37] a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord.

  1. Leviticus is a most interesting and important book; a book containing a code of sacrificial, ceremonial, civil, and judicial laws, which, for the purity of their morality, the wisdom, justice, and beneficence of their enactments, and the simplicity, dignity, and impressive nature of their rites, are perfectly unrivalled, and altogether worthy of their Divine Author. All the rites and ceremonies of the Mosaic law are at once dignified and expressive. They point out the holiness of their Author, the sinfulness of man, the necessity of an atonement, and the state of moral excellence to which the grace and mercy of the Creator have destined to raise the human soul. They include, as well as point out, the gospel of the Son of God; from which they receive their consummation and perfection. The sacrifices and oblations were significant of the atonement of Christ; the requisite qualities of these sacrifices were emblematical of his immaculate character; and the prescribed mode in the form of these offerings, and the mystical rites ordained, were allusive institutions, calculated to enlighten the apprehensions of the Jews, and to prepare them for the reception of the Gospel. The institution of the high priesthood typified Jesus, the Great High Priest, called and prepared of God, who hath an unchangeable priesthood, and is able to save to the uttermost all that come unto God by him.

  25. Olah, a burnt offering, from âlah, to ascend, because this offering ascended, as it were, to God in flame and smoke, being wholly consumed; for which reason its is called in the Septuagint, ολοκαυτωμα, a whole burnt offering. This was the most important of all the sacrifices; and no part of it was eaten either by the priest or the offerer, but the whole was offered to God. It has been sufficiently shewn by learned men, that almost every nation of the earth, in every age, had their burnt offerings, from the persuasion that there was no other way to appease the incensed gods; and they even offered human sacrifices, because they imagined that life was necessary to redeem life, and that the gods would be satisfied with nothing less.
