⥃A Prophecy against Mount Seir
[1] Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,2 [2] Son of man, set3 thy face against mount4 Seir, and prophesy5 against it, [3] And say unto it, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, O mount Seir, I [am6] against thee, and I will stretch7 out mine hand against thee, and I will make thee most desolate8. [4] I will lay9 thy cities waste, and thou10 shalt be desolate, and thou shalt know that I [am] the Lord. [5] Because thou hast had11 a perpetual hatred12, and hast shed [the blood of13] the children of Israel by the force14 of the sword in the15 time of their calamity, in the time [that their] iniquity [had] an end: [6] Therefore, [as] I live, saith the Lord God, I will16 prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: sith17 thou hast not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee. [7] Thus will I make mount Seir most desolate18, and cut off from it him that passeth19 out and him that returneth. [8] And I will fill his mountains with his slain [men]: in thy hills, and in thy valleys, and in all thy rivers, shall they fall that are slain with the sword.20 [9] I will make21 thee perpetual22 desolations, and thy cities shall not return: and ye23 shall know that I [am] the Lord. [10] Because thou hast24 said, These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess it; whereas25 the Lord was there: [11] Therefore, [as] I live, saith the Lord God, I will even26 do according to thine anger, and according to thine envy which thou hast used out of thy hatred against them; and I27 will make myself known among them, when I have judged thee. [12] And thou28 shalt know that I [am] the Lord, [and that] I have heard29 all thy blasphemies which thou hast spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, They are laid desolate, they are given30 us to consume31. [13] Thus with32 your mouth ye have boasted33 against me, and have multiplied34 your words against me: I have35 heard [them]. [14] Thus saith the Lord God; When the whole earth rejoiceth, I will make thee desolate.36 [15] As thou didst37 rejoice at the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so will I do unto thee: thou shalt38 be desolate, O mount Seir, and all Idumea39, [even] all of it: and they40 shall know that I [am] the Lord.

After being subdued by Nebuchadnezzar, about five years after the destruction of Jerusalem, many of the Edomites, during the Babylonian captivity, being driven from their ancient habitation by the Nabatheans, seized upon the south-western part of Judea; but afterwards they were conquered by Hyrcanus, and reduced to the necessity of embracing the Jewish religion; and at last became either incorporated with that nation, or swallowed up and lost among the Nabathean Arabs, so that the very name was abolished and disused about the end of the first century after Christ. Their country is now barren; and their cities, even Bozra and Petra, totally demolished and in ruins. ↩
