Securing the City

[1] Now it came to pass, when the wall2 was built, and I had set up3 the doors, and the porters4 and the singers and the Levites were appointed, [2] That I gave my brother5 Hanani, and Hananiah6 the ruler7 of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he [was] a faithful man8, and feared God9 above many. [3] And I said unto them, Let not the gates10 of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar [them]: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one [to be11] over against his house.

The List of Returning Exiles[ Ezra 2:1–67 ]

[4] Now the city [was] large and great12: but the people [were] few therein, and the houses13 [were] not builded.

[5] And my God14 put into mine15 heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that16 they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein, [6] These [are] the children17 of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar18 the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city; [7] Who came with Zerubbabel19, Jeshua20, Nehemiah, Azariah21, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth22, Bigvai, Nehum23, Baanah. The number, [I say], of the men of the people of Israel [was this]; [8] The children of Parosh24, two thousand an hundred seventy and two. [9] The children of Shephatiah25, three hundred seventy and two. [10] The children of Arah26, six hundred fifty and two. [11] The children of Pahath–moab27, of the children of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand and eight hundred [and] eighteen. [12] The children of Elam28, a thousand two hundred fifty and four. [13] The children of Zattu29, eight hundred forty and five. [14] The children of Zaccai30, seven hundred and threescore. [15] The children of Binnui31, six hundred forty and eight. [16] The children of Bebai32, six hundred twenty and eight. [17] The children of Azgad33, two thousand three hundred twenty and two. [18] The children of Adonikam34, six hundred threescore and seven. [19] The children of Bigvai35, two thousand36 threescore and seven. [20] The children of Adin37, six hundred38 fifty and five. [21] The children of Ater39 of Hezekiah, ninety and eight. [22] The children of Hashum40, three hundred twenty and eight. [23] The children of Bezai41, three hundred twenty and four. [24] The children of Hariph42, an hundred and twelve. [25] The children of Gibeon43, ninety and five. [26] The men44 of Beth–lehem45 and Netophah, an hundred fourscore and eight. [27] The men of Anathoth46, an hundred twenty and eight. [28] The men of Beth–azmaveth47, forty and two. [29] The men of Kirjath–jearim48, Chephirah, and Beeroth, seven hundred forty and three. [30] The men of Ramah49 and Geba, six hundred twenty and one. [31] The men of Michmas50, an hundred and twenty and two. [32] The men of Beth–el51 and Ai, an hundred twenty and three. [33] The men of the other Nebo52, fifty and two53. [34] The children of the other Elam54, a thousand two hundred fifty and four. [35] The children of Harim55, three hundred and twenty. [36] The children of Jericho56, three hundred forty and five. [37] The children of Lod57, Hadid, and Ono, seven hundred twenty and one. [38] The children of Senaah58, three thousand nine hundred and thirty.

[39] [¶]The priests: the children of Jedaiah59, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred seventy and three. [40] The children of Immer60, a thousand fifty and two. [41] The children of Pashur61, a thousand two hundred forty and seven. [42] The children of Harim62, a thousand and seventeen.

[43] [¶]The Levites: the children of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, [and] of the children of Hodevah63, seventy and four.

[44] [¶]The singers64: the children of Asaph, an hundred65 forty and eight.

[45] [¶]The porters66: the children of Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai, an hundred thirty and eight.

[46] [¶]The Nethinims67: the children of Ziha, the children of Hashupha68, the children of Tabbaoth, [47] The children of Keros, the children of Sia69, the children of Padon, [48] The children of Lebana, the children of Hagaba70, the children of Shalmai71, [49] The children of Hanan, the children of Giddel, the children of Gahar, [50] The children of Reaiah, the children of Rezin, the children of Nekoda, [51] The children of Gazzam, the children of Uzza, the children of Phaseah72, [52] The children of Besai, the children of Meunim73, the children of Nephishesim, [53] The children of Bakbuk, the children of Hakupha, the children of Harhur, [54] The children of Bazlith74, the children of Mehida, the children of Harsha, [55] The children of Barkos, the children of Sisera, the children of Tamah75, [56] The children of Neziah, the children of Hatipha.

[57] [¶]The children of Solomon’s76 servants: the children of Sotai, the children of Sophereth, the children of Perida77, [58] The children of Jaala78, the children of Darkon, the children of Giddel, [59] The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Amon79. [60] All the Nethinims80, and the children of Solomon’s servants, [were] three hundred ninety and two. [61] And these [were] they which went up [also] from Tel–melah, Tel–haresha81, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not shew their father’s house, nor their seed82, whether they [were] of Israel. [62] The children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred83 forty and two.

[63] [¶]And of the priests84: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai85, which took [one] of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife, and was called after their name. [64] These sought86 their register [among] those that were87 reckoned by genealogy, but it was88 not found: therefore were they, as polluted89, put from the priesthood. [65] And the Tirshatha90 said unto them, that they should91 not eat of the most holy things, till there92 stood [up] a priest with Urim and Thummim.

[66] [¶]The whole congregation together [was] forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore,93 [67] Beside their manservants94 and their maidservants, of whom [there were] seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and they had two hundred95 forty and five singing men and singing women. [68] Their horses, seven hundred thirty and six: their mules, two hundred forty and five:96 [69] [Their] camels, four hundred thirty and five: six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses.97

Offerings by the Exiles[ Exodus 38:21–31 Ezra 2:68–70 ]

[70] [¶]And some98 of the chief99 of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha100 gave to the treasure a thousand drams101 of gold, fifty basons102, five hundred and thirty priests’ garments. [71] And [some] of the chief103 of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pound104 of silver. [72] And [that] which the rest of the people gave [was] twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand pound of silver, and threescore and seven priests’ garments. [73] So the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and [some] of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel105, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh106 month came, the children of Israel [were] in their cities.

  44. The Septuagint reads here the same as in the parallel place, Υιοι Βαιθαλεμ, εκατον εικοσιτρεις; υιοι Ατωφα (Alex. Ανετωφα) πεντηκονταεξ; "The children of Beth–lehem, one hundred twenty and three; the children of Netophah, fifty and six." Though this reading is not found in any Hebrew manuscript yet collated, it is doubtless the true one.

  50. The variation between ξλξωΡ ( ‎מִכְמָס‎ ), Michmash, and ξλξρ ( ‎מִכְמָס‎ ), Michmas, arises from the mutation of ωΡ, sheen, and ρ, samech; though several manuscripts have the former reading here also. 1Sam 13:5, 1Sam 13:23. Ezra 2:27, Isa 10:28, Michmash.

  70. Ezra 2:45-46, Hagabah, or Hagab, The Alexandrian manuscript of the Septuagint inserts here, υιοι Ακουδ, υιοι Ουτα, υιοι Κηταρ, υιοι Αγαβ "the children of Akoud, the children of Outa, the children of Ketar, the children of Agab," or Hagab. See the parallel passages.

  71. In the parallel passage not only the Keri and Septuagint, but many of Dr. Kennicott's manuscripts read Shalmai, as here. A more extensive collation of manuscripts would doubtless tend still more to harmonize both the names and numbers. Ezra 2:46, Shamlai

  72. This variation only exists in the translation; the original being uniformly Paseah. Ezra 2:49, Paseah

  73. The first of these variations is attributable to the translation, the original being uniformly, ξςεπιν ( ‎מְעוּנִי‎ ), Meunim; and the latter arises from the mutation of, ε, wav, and, ι, yood, and insertion of, ωΡ, sheen, though in the parallel passage the Kethiv is πτιριν ( ‎נְפִיסִים‎ ), Nephisim; and here the Keri and many manuscripts have πτιωΡριν ( ‎נְפוּשְׁסִים‎ ), Nephishesim. Ezra 2:50, Mehunim, Nephusim

  74. Instead of Bazlith, many manuscripts and the LXX have Bazluth, as in the parallel place. Ezra 2:52, Bazluth

  76. Neh 11:3

  77. Three manuscripts have Peruda, instead of Perida, as in Ezra. Ezra 2:55, Peruda

  78. The variation of ιςμδ ( ‎יַעֲלָא‎ ), Jaalah, and ιςμΰ ( ‎יַעֲלָא‎ ), Jaala, merely arises from the mutation of δ, hay, into ΰ, aleph, according to the Chaldee dialect. Ezra 2:56, Jaalah

  79. Instead of Amon, two of De Rossi's manuscripts have Amin, and the LXX have Ημιμ, Emim; which nearly approaches the Ami of Ezra. Ezra 2:57, Ami

  80. Ezra 2:58

  81. The first of these variations only exists in the translation; the original being uniformly ϊμ ηψωΡΰ ( ‎תֵּל חַרְשָׁא‎ ), Tel̇harshà the latter simply arises from the insertion of a ε, wav; being written ΰγο ( ‎אַדָּן‎ ), Addan, in the parallel passage, and ΰγεο ( ‎אַדּוֹן‎ ), Addon, here. Ezra 2:59, Tel–harsa, Addan

  97. Here Jerome adds, in the Vulgate, Hucusque refertur quid in commentario scriptum fuerit; exin Nehemie historia texitur̀ "Thus far do the words extend which were written in the register; what follows belongs to the history of Nehemiah." This addition is not found in the Hebrew, or any ancient version. It is also wanting in the Paris and Complutensian Polyglotts; but is found in the Editio Prima of the Vulgate. What follows, however, seems to relate to a distinct oblation from that recorded in Ezra; and was probably made after the people were registered by Nehemiah, who was the Tirshatha, or governor, at this time, as Zerubbabel had been at the first return of the Jews from captivity. Blessed be God that our faith and hope are not built upon the niceties of names and numbers, genealogy and chronology, but on the great things of the law and gospel. Whatever is given to the work of God and his cause will surely be remembered by him (Heb 6:10).

  105. It was for the purpose of ascertaining the different families, and consequently the different cities, villages, etc., which belonged to them, according to the ancient division of the land, that the public registers were examined.
