David’s Triumphs[ 2 Samuel 8:1–14 Psalms 60:1–12 ]

[1] Now after this2 it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them, and took Gath3 and her towns out of the hand of the Philistines.4 [2] And he smote5 Moab; and the Moabites became David’s servants, [and] brought gifts6.

[3] [¶]And David smote Hadarezer7 king of Zobah8 unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion by the river9 Euphrates. [4] And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand10 horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: David11 also houghed all the chariot [horses], but reserved of them an hundred chariots12. [5] And when the Syrians13 of Damascus14 came to help15 Hadarezer king of Zobah16, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men. [6] Then David put [garrisons] in Syria–damascus; and the Syrians became David’s17 servants, [and] brought gifts. Thus the Lord18 preserved David whithersoever he went. [7] And David took the shields19 of gold that were on the servants of Hadarezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. [8] Likewise from Tibhath20, and from Chun, cities of Hadarezer, brought David very much brass, wherewith21 Solomon made the brasen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass.

[9] Now when Tou22 king of Hamath heard how David had smitten all the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah; [10] He sent Hadoram23 his son to king David, to enquire24 of his welfare, and to congratulate him25, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war26 with Tou;) and [with him] all manner27 of vessels of gold and silver and brass.

[11] [¶]Them also king David dedicated28 unto the Lord, with the silver and the gold that he brought from all [these] nations; from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children29 of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek30. [12] Moreover31 Abishai32 the son of Zeruiah slew of the Edomites33 in the valley of salt34 eighteen thousand.

[13] [¶]And he put garrisons35 in Edom; and all the Edomites36 became David’s servants. Thus the Lord37 preserved David whithersoever he went.

David’s Officers[ 2 Samuel 8:15–18 ]

[14] [¶]So David38 reigned over all Israel, and executed39 judgment and justice among all his people. [15] And Joab40 the son of Zeruiah [was] over the host; and Jehoshaphat41 the son of Ahilud, recorder42. [16] And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Abimelech43 the son of Abiathar44, [were] the priests; and Shavsha45 was scribe; [17] And Benaiah46 the son of Jehoiada [was] over the Cherethites47 and the Pelethites; and the sons of David [were] chief about the king48.

  7. Hadadezer, δγγςζψ ( ‎הֲדַדְעֶזֶר‎ ), in the parallel passage, seems an evident mistake for δγψςζψ ( ‎הֲדַרְעֶזֶר‎ ), Hadarezer; for the LXX and Vulgate there, as here, read Αδρααζαρ, Adarezer. The difference arises from the mistake of a ψ, raish, for a γ, daleth, two letters very similar. 2Sam 8:3, Hadadezer

  11. The words wyakker Dawid eth col haraichev, should be rendered, "and David disjointed all the chariots;" which is nearly the rendering of the LXX, και παραλυσε Δανιδ παντα τα αρματα. To have houghed the horses would have been both unreasonable and inhuman; for, as he had gained so complete a victory, there was no danger of their falling into the hands of the enemy; and if he did not choose to keep them, which indeed the law would not permit, he ought to have killed them outright., houghed, Deut 17:16; Josh 11:6, Josh 11:9; Ps 20:7, Ps 33:16-17
