⥃The Overthrow of Nineveh

[1] He that dasheth in pieces2 is come up before thy face: keep3 the munition, watch the way, make [thy] loins strong, fortify [thy] power mightily. [2] For the Lord hath4 turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency5 of Israel: for6 the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches. [3] The shield of his mighty men is made7 red, the valiant men [are] in scarlet8: the chariots [shall be] with flaming9 torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees10 shall be terribly shaken. [4] The chariots11 shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem12 like torches, they shall run like the lightnings. [5] He shall recount13 his worthies14: they shall stumble15 in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence16 shall be prepared. [6] The gates17 of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved18. [7] And Huzzab19 shall be led away captive20, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead [her] as with the voice of doves21, tabering upon their breasts. [8] But Nineveh [is] of old22 like23 a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand24, stand, [shall they cry]; but none shall look back25. [9] Take ye26 the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for [there is] none end of the store27 [and] glory out of all the pleasant furniture28. [10] She is29 empty30, and void, and waste: and the heart31 melteth, and the knees32 smite together, and much33 pain [is] in all loins, and the faces34 of them all gather blackness. [11] Where [is] the dwelling35 of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, [even] the old lion, walked, [and] the lion’s whelp, and none36 made [them] afraid? [12] The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled37 his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin. [13] Behold, I [am38] against thee, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will burn39 her chariots in the smoke, and the sword40 shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut41 off thy prey from the earth, and the voice42 of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

  29. Nineveh was taken and utterly ruined by Assuerus, or Cyaxares, king of Media, and Nabuchodonosor, or Nabopolassar, king of Babylon, bc 606, or 612. Diodorus, who with others ascribes the taking of it to Arbaces the Mede and Belesis the Babylonian, says that he "dispersed the citizens in the villages, levelled the city with the ground, transferred the gold and silver, of which there were many talents, to Ecbatana the metropolis of the Medes, and this subverted the empire of the Assyrians." ↩
