Forty-Eight Cities for the Levites[ Numbers 35:1–8 1 Chronicles 6:54–81 ]

[1] Then came near the heads2 of the fathers of the Levites unto Eleazar3 the priest, and unto Joshua the son of Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel; [2] And they spake unto them at Shiloh4 in the land of Canaan, saying, The Lord5 commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle. [3] And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites6 out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the Lord, these cities and their suburbs. [4] And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the children7 of Aaron the priest, [which were] of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe8 of Judah, and out of the tribe of Simeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities. [5] And the rest of the children of Kohath [had] by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.9 [6] And the children of Gershon [had] by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.10 [7] The children of Merari by their families [had] out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.11 [8] And the children of Israel gave by lot12 unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the Lord13 commanded by the hand of Moses.

[9] And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities14 which are [here] mentioned15 by name, [10] Which the children of Aaron, [being] of the families of the Kohathites, [who were] of the children of Levi, had: for theirs was the first lot.16 [11] And they17 gave them the city of Arba18 the father of Anak, which [city is] Hebron19, in the hill20 [country] of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it. [12] But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.21

[13] [¶]Thus they gave22 to the children of Aaron the priest Hebron23 with her suburbs, [to be] a city24 of refuge for the slayer; and Libnah25 with her suburbs, [14] And Jattir26 with her suburbs, and Eshtemoa27 with her suburbs, [15] And Holon28 with her suburbs, and Debir29 with her suburbs, [16] And Ain30 with her suburbs, and Juttah31 with her suburbs, [and] Beth–shemesh32 with her suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes. [17] And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon33 with her suburbs, Geba34 with her suburbs, [18] Anathoth35 with her suburbs, and Almon36 with her suburbs; four cities. [19] All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, [were] thirteen cities with their suburbs.

[20] [¶]And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites which remained of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim.37 [21] For they gave them Shechem38 with her suburbs in mount Ephraim, [to be] a city of refuge for the slayer; and Gezer39 with her suburbs, [22] And Kibzaim with her suburbs, and Beth–horon40 with her suburbs; four cities. [23] And out of the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh41 with her suburbs, Gibbethon42 with her suburbs, [24] Aijalon43 with her suburbs, Gath–rimmon44 with her suburbs; four cities. [25] And out of the half tribe of Manasseh, Tanach45 with her suburbs, and Gath–rimmon with her suburbs; two cities.46 [26] All the cities [were] ten with their suburbs for the families of the children of Kohath that remained.

[27] [¶]And unto47 the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the [other] half tribe of Manasseh [they gave] Golan48 in Bashan with her suburbs, [to be] a city of refuge for the slayer; and Beesh–terah49 with her suburbs; two cities. [28] And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kishon with her suburbs, Dabareh50 with her suburbs, [29] Jarmuth51 with her suburbs, En–gannim with her suburbs; four cities. [30] And out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal52 with her suburbs, Abdon with her suburbs, [31] Helkath with her suburbs, and Rehob53 with her suburbs; four cities. [32] And out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh54 in Galilee with her suburbs, [to be] a city of refuge for the slayer; and Hammoth–dor55 with her suburbs, and Kartan56 with her suburbs; three cities. [33] All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families [were] thirteen cities with their suburbs.

[34] [¶]And unto57 the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam58 with her suburbs, and Kartah with her suburbs, [35] Dimnah59 with her suburbs, Nahalal with her suburbs; four cities. [36] And out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer60 with her suburbs, and Jahazah61 with her suburbs, [37] Kedemoth with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs; four cities. [38] And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth62 in Gilead with her suburbs, [to be] a city of refuge for the slayer; and Mahanaim63 with her suburbs, [39] Heshbon64 with her suburbs, Jazer65 with her suburbs; four cities in all. [40] So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which were remaining of the families of the Levites, were [by] their lot twelve cities. [41] All the cities of the Levites within66 the possession of the children of Israel [were] forty67 and eight cities with their suburbs. [42] These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus [were] all these cities.

[43] And the Lord gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.68 [44] And the Lord gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand.69 [45] There failed not ought of any good thing which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass. 70

  8. These tribes furnished more habitation to the Levites, in proportion, than any of the other tribes, because they possessed a more extensive inheritance, agreeably to what Moses had commanded (Num 35:8). It is worthy of remark, that the principal part of this tribe, whose business was to minister at the sanctuary, which sanctuary was afterwards established at Jerusalem, had their appointment nearest to that city; so that they were always within reach of the sacred work which God had appointed them.

  44. Gath–rimmon is said by Jerome to be a great town 10 miles from Diospolis, or Lydda, towards Eleutheropolis.

  45. Josh 17:11; Judg 5:19

  46. Aner and Bileam are mentioned in Chronicles, instead of Tanach and Gath–rimmon (1Chr 6:70). Either the cities had at this time different names, or afterwards their names were changed; or the Levites, being by some means dispossessed of the cities first assigned them, received others from their brethren. A careful examination of the marginal references will discover other variations of this kind, which may be accounted for in the same manner.

  47. Josh 21:6

  48. Josh 20:8; Deut 1:4, Deut 4:43; 1Chr 6:71

  49. It is very probable that Beesh–terah is a contraction of baith ashtaroth, "the house of Ashtaroth," and the same as Ashtaroth, which is the reading in 1Chr 6:71

  50. Josh 19:12; 1Chr 6:72-73

  51. This seems to be the same city with Remeth, Josh 10:19, Josh 10:21, and Ramoth, 1Chr 6:73, mentioned with En–gannim. Josh 10:3, Josh 10:23, Josh 12:11

  58. Josh 12:22, Josh 19:11, Josh 19:15

  59. This and the following verse are wholly omitted by the Masora, and many Hebrew Bibles which are esteemed very highly; though, without them, neither the twelve cities of the Merarites in particular (Josh 21:40), nor the forty-eight Levitical cities in general (Josh 21:41), nor the six cities of refuge, can be made up. But these two verses, are thus absolutely necessary for the truth and consistency of this chapter, are happily preserved in no less than 149 manuscripts collated by Dr. Kennicott, and upwards of 40 collated by De Rossi. 67. At the last census, the tribe of Levi amounted only to 23,000 (Num 26:62); and it is thought by some that forty-eight cities was too great a proportion for this tribe. But it should be considered, that cities in ancient times were little more than villages.
