⥃Saul’s Overthrow and Death [ 1 Samuel 31:1–6 † 2 Samuel 1:1–16 ]
[1] Now the Philistines fought2 against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain3 in mount4 Gilboa.5 [2] And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan6, and Abinadab7, and Malchi–shua, the sons8 of Saul. [3] And the battle went9 sore against Saul, and the archers10 hit11 him, and he was12 wounded of the archers. [4] Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw13 thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised14 come and abuse15 me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was16 sore afraid. So Saul took17 a sword, and fell upon it. [5] And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died. [6] So Saul18 died, and his three sons, and all his house19 died together.
⥃The Philistines Possess the Towns [ 1 Samuel 31:7–10 ]
[7] And when all the men of Israel that [were] in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they20 forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
[8] And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip21 the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa. [9] And when they had stripped him, they took22 his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings23 unto their idols, and to the people. [10] And they put his armour in the house of their gods24, and fastened his head in the temple25 of Dagon.
⥃Jabesh-gilead’s Tribute to Saul [ 1 Samuel 31:11–13 ]
[11] [¶]And when26 all Jabesh–gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, [12] They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak27 in Jabesh, and fasted28 seven days.
[13] [¶]So Saul died for his transgression which he committed29 against the Lord, [even] against30 the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking31 [counsel] of [one that had] a familiar32 spirit, to enquire [of it]; [14] And enquired33 not of the Lord: therefore he slew34 him, and turned35 the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse36.

"All his men," in Samuel; that is, all who were present with him in the battle; and his family received such a blow, that it never recovered itself again. For though Ish–bosheth reigned over a part of the country, yet it was not in any splendour. This history seems to be repeated here as an introduction to that of the kingdom of David. ↩
