(ἵστημι) anything set upright:

__I mast, ἱστὸν.. στῆσαν ἀείραντες they stepped the mast, [Refs 8th c.BC+]; opposed to καθαιρεῖν, κὰδ δ᾽ ἕλον ἱστόν took it down, unstepped it, [Refs 8th c.BC+]: generally, rod, pole, ἱστὸς χάλκεος [Refs 5th c.BC+]; beam, [Refs]
__II beam of a loom, which stood upright, instead of lying horizontal as in our looms; πόσσω κατέβα τοι ἀφ᾽ ἱστ; (i.e. τὸ ἐμπερόναμα) [Refs 3rd c.BC+]; later ἱ. ὄρθιος (opposed to the horizontal loom), [Refs 2nd c.AD+]: generally, loom, ἱστόν τ᾽ ἠλακάτην τε [Refs 8th c.BC+], etc.; ἱ. στήσασθαι to set up the beam and so begin a web, [Refs 8th c.BC+]; ἱ. ἐποίχεσθαι to traverse the loom, because the weaver was obliged to walk to and fro, [Refs 8th c.BC+]
