But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had instructed; they let the boys live.

וַ תִּירֶ֤אןָ הַֽ מְיַלְּדֹת֙ אֶת ־ הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְ לֹ֣א עָשׂ֔וּ כַּ אֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר אֲלֵי הֶ֖ן מֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרָ֑יִם וַ תְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ אֶת ־ הַ יְלָדִֽים ׃
