genitive σκνῑπός: nominative plural σκνῖφες [LXX]; accusative σκνίπας [ῐ] [Refs 2nd c.BC+]:—an insect found under the bark of trees, eaten by the woodpecker, [Refs 4th c.BC+] (in both places with variant{κνίψ}, which is the form used by [Refs 4th c.BC+] 'a flea at home!' [Refs 5th c.BC+]:—an insect which attacks vines, [Refs 2nd c.AD+]. (Cf. Slavonic sknipa 'gnat'.)
