mostly used in present and imperfect, Epic dialect imperfect ὀδύρομαιετο, ὀδύρομαιοντο (without augment), Ionic dialect ὀδυρέσκετο [Refs 5th c.BC+]: future ὀδῠροῦμαι [Refs 5th c.BC+]: aorist ὠδῡράμην [Refs 3rd c.BC+]; participle ὀδῡράμενος [Refs 8th c.BC+]: aorist passive κατ-ωδύρθην [Refs 1st c.AD+]—In Trag. the form δύρομαι is required by the metre in [ὀδύρομαιομαι">Refs 5th c.BC+] is necessary; elsewhere either form is possible:—lament, bewail, a person or thing:

__1 with accusative person, ὀδυρομένη φίλα τέκνα [ὀδύρομαιοντο 24.714, compare 5th c.BC: Sophocles Tragicus “Oedipus Coloneus” 1439, “Ant.” 693:">Refs 8th c.BC+] less frequently with accusative _of things_, ὁ δ᾽ ὀδύρομαιετο πατρίδα γαῖαν mourned for it, i.e. for the want of it, [Refs 8th c.BC+]
__2 with genitive person, mourn for, for the sake of.., ὡς δὲ πατὴρ οὗ παιδὸς ὀ. [Refs 8th c.BC+]
__3 ὀ. τινί wail or lament to or before, ἐξελθὼν λαιοῖσιν ὀ. [Refs 8th c.BC+]; ἀλλήλοισιν ὀδύρομαιονται wail aloud one to another, [Refs 8th c.BC+]
__4 absolutely, wail, mourn, frequently in [Refs 8th c.BC+], in participle, -όμενος στεναχίζω [Refs 8th c.BC+]; τίταῦτ᾽ ὀδύρομαιομα; why mourn I thus? [Refs 5th c.BC+]; θρηνοῦντός τε μου καὶ ὀδυρομένου [Refs 5th c.BC+]
