barley-groats, singular in [Refs 8th c.BC+] only in phrase ἀλφίτου ἀκτή[Refs 8th c.BC+], frequently in Attic dialect; used to sprinkle over roast meat, [Refs 8th c.BC+]; especially over sacrificial victims, [Refs 8th c.BC+] to drink wine with barley-groats in it, [Refs 2nd c.BC+]:—of this was made a kind of barley-water, πιεῖν ἄλφιτα[Refs 5th c.BC+]; also, poultices, [Refs 1st c.AD+]: also used as hair-powder by κανηφόροι, [Refs 5th c.BC+]
