a bird, probably the thickknee or Norfolk plover, Charadrius oedicnemus, [LXX+5th c.BC+]; it was very greedy, hence proverbial χαραδριοῦ βίον ζῆν, of a glutton, [Refs 5th c.BC+]; the sight of it was held to be a cure for the jaundice,[Refs 6th c.BC+]
